Abstract

1343815 Centrifugal separators AUTOMETRICS CO 21 April 1971 [6 May 1970] 10412/71 Heading B2P [Also in Division F2] An apparatus for degassing a liquid or a slurry of suspended solid particles having gas entrained therein comprises a liquid-receiving tank 12, a rotary chamber 62 within the tank with one or more apertures 68 in its periphery for the discharge of degassed liquid or slurry into the tank below the normal liquid level therein, means 76 for introducing the liquid or slurry into the chamber, an outlet in the chamber for separated gas, and vacuum means communicating with the gas outlet to extract the separated gas from the chamber and maintain a vacuum therein. The top of the tank 12 carries a support plate 18 to which is secured a cylindrical extension 22 closed by a top 23 having a central opening 24. The chamber 62 is in the form of a pair of spherical segments, as shown, or of a double cone. The inner and outer walls of the chamber are covered by a coating 63 of elastomer to resist abrasion and the bottom has a clean-out opening 64 closable by a cover 66. The chamber is secured to a tubular member 60 which is screw-threaded to the lower end of a tubular drive shaft 44 supported in bearings 40, 42 in a housing 30 which is secured to the support plate 18 and which has an apertured plate 48 secured to its top. Elastomer ring seals are provided at 46 and 54. The shaft 44 is driven by an electric motor 100 through belt 28 and pulleys 58, 106. A cap 70 extends through the opening 24 in the top 23 and has a central bore 72 in which are threaded a valved inlet pipe 16 and a feed pipe 76 which passes through the tubular shaft 44 and the member 60 and extends into the chamber 62 just above its bottom. The cap 70 has a passage 88 communicating at one end with a vacuum line 90 and at the other end with the annular space 87 within the tubular shaft so that by connecting the line 90 to a vacuum pump the separated, gas can be removed from chamber 62 and a vacuum created therein. Gas-tightness is provided between the space 87 and the ambient atmosphere by a spring-loaded seal 80 (see Division F2) which is lubricated by lubricant supplied through a channel 118 in cap 70. The interior of the tank 12 has radial baffles 92, 94 above and below chamber 62. A horizontal baffle 96 is positioned above the chamber 62 and below the normal liquid level indicated at 98. A pipe 108, 110 is connected to an outlet 14 of the tank and to a chamber 112 which contains instrumentation for measurement of a parameter of the degassed liquid or slurry and which has an overflow 114 which establishes the normal liquid level 98 in the tank. Further level control is provided by an over flow weir 116 in the wall of the tank.
