Abstract
535,728. Friction clutches. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., WOOLLEY, G. H W., and HENDERSON, M. W. Aug. 15, 1939, No. 8452/40. Divided out of 536,248,[Group XXXIX]. [Class 80 (iii)] In a friction clutch a third member 26 is inserted between the driving member 83 and the driven member 81, friction faces being between the members 26, 83. The opposed faces of the members 26, 81, are formed with ratchet teeth 90, 91, between which one or more rollers 82 are positioned. The clutch is held out of engagement by a pawl (not shown) which engages a stop 88 on the perimeter of the third member 26 and holds it stationary, the balls lying in the valleys between the ratchet teeth. When the member 26 is released it is dragged round by friction by the member 83 and relative motion results between the members 26, 81, causing the former to tend to move to the left to engage the clutch. As shown, the driven member 81 is secured to cams 27, 32, 34 all on a sleeve 89 on a bearing sleeve 86 running on a bush 87 fixed to the driving shaft 3.
