535,237. Hydraulic brakes for vehicles. AKTIEBOLAGET VOLVO. Nov. 20, 1939, No. 30444. Convention date, Nov. 7. [Class 103 (i)] Hydraulic brakes for motor vehicles, in which liquid is forced from a main cylinder into a wheel cylinder, are constructed to have release of liquid pressure in the wheel cylinder effected first at a rapid rate and then more slowly, the main cylinder communicating with the wheel cylinder through a large opening, controlled by a valve self-closing at a certain releasing pressure, and also through a narrow opening in parallel with the large opening. In the construction shown, liquid put under pressure by the return spring of the brake shoes is forced through the pipe 5 to lift the valve cap 18 so that the liquid passes readily into the main cylinder 1 through apertures in the flange 21 of the valve 18; when the pressure is sufficiently reduced the valve 18 is forced down by the spring 16 to close the apertures in the flange 18 and the liquid is then discharged more slowly through a small aperture 25 in the valve 18. When the brake is applied liquid is forced through holes 20 in the sides of the valve and presses aside the rubber body 19 in the valve 18 and passes it through the opening 17 into the pipe 5.
