Abstract

535,157. Variable resistances ; grid resistances. CHANCE BROS. & CO., Ltd., and HALLETT, L. B. H. Feb. 8, 1940, No. 2450. [Class 37] A resistance comprises a number of resistance elements a, each in the form of a looped metal strip or wire and having its ends arranged adjacent to each other. Flat spacing pieces b of insulating material are arranged between these ends. Contact pieces c in the form of flat rectangular plates each having a thickened portion at one edge are inserted between adjacent ends of successive resistance elements a with the thickened edges projecting in spaced relationship with each other beyond the extremities of the elements. The resistance elements a, insulating spacers b, and contact pieces c are each formed with a hole through which passes a rod d with an insulating sleeve e. The assembly is clamped by nuts f, between which and the adjacent resistance elements are interposed insulating washers g. The resistance elements, insulating pieces, and contact pieces may alternatively be mounted on a pair of parallel rods each provided with nuts. The resistance elements may be arranged in the same line or they may be spread out fanwise to facilitate cooling. In a modification, the parts are mounted between adjacent sides of a pair of supports or between the adjacent edges of a slot formed in a single support. The adjacent edges of the support or supports are adapted to be engaged by notches in the sides of the parts to be assembled between them, which parts are clamped by a screw or spring at one or each end of the assembly.
