177,399. Langrish, N. G., and Metropolitan - Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. March 22, 1921. Resistance grids.-A rheostat is composed of a number of resistance grids of the kind made of strip or sheet-metal or wire, separated by electrically-insulating heat-absorbing material, such as asbestos mill-board or metal plates insulated by mica, to give increased thermal capacity. The grids 1 and insulating-plates 2 are mounted upon. metal rods 3 covered with mica or other insulating-material 4. The grids are provided at their ends with lugs 11, which are slotted at 12 to fit over the rods 3, the insulating-plates being cut as at 13 for this purpose. Adjacent lugs 11 at alternate ends are connected together by interposed metal washers 14; the lugs that are not to be connected together may be separated by insulating-washers, or by extensions of the insulating- plates 2. Terminals are provided by metal washers 15 having laterally extending lugs 16. The assembled grids and insulating-plates are clamped up between stiffening-plates 5 of iron or other heat-conducting material, and may be assembled in groups with stiff ening-plates between the groups.
