Abstract

1,196,620. Resistance heating elements. SMITHS INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 Jan., 1969 [1 Dec., 1967], No. 54806/67. Heading H5H. In a heating assembly of the kind comprising a coiled heating element 17 supported by a plurality of spaced insulating plates 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, which are mounted between a pair of metal plates 6, 7, successive portions of the heating element between adjacent insulating plates are inclined so that each length of the element between end plates 1, 5 is slightly zig-zagged, with the result that the element is held by its spring tension in engagement with the insulating plates 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. The plates 6, 7 are retained sprung together by means of one or more wire springs which comprise straight sections extending between the plates and swan-neck ends which engage the plates 6, 7. The swan-neck ends may pass through slots in the plates or over the edges of the plates and may be retained in holes or recesses in the plates. The spacers have slots in their side edges which support element 17. Adjacent spacers may be different, i.e. their slots may be slightly staggered to produce the zig-zag configuration of the heating element. As shown, the spacers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are identical and staggering of the supporting slots of adjacent spacers is achieved by mounting alternate spacers at different levels. As shown spacers 1, 3 and 5 are located at one level by recessed portions 11, 13, 15 of plate 6 and spacers 2, 4 are located at another level by recessed portions 12, 14 of plate 7. Tabs 8, 9 of each insulating spacer pass through slots in plates 6, 7 and are retained therein by deformation of a metal strip between the tab slots and an adjacent slot, a screwdriver being inserted in the adjacent slot and rotated to deform the metal strip.
