Abstract

534,975. Typewriters. ROYAL TYPEWRITER CO., Inc. Sept. 19, 1939, No. 26179. Convention date, Oct. 1, 1938. [Class 100 (iv)] Margin stops.-In arrangements comprising a pair of stops connected by a resilient member such as a spring which, on release of the stops, moves them into contact with a centre-stop to facilitate re-setting by adjustment of the carriage, a uniform pull on the stops, regardless of their positions, is ensured by employing a resilient member of substantially greater length than the maximum distance between the stops. The margin and line-locking stops G, G' shown in Figs. 3 and 7 are secured to a rack H on the carriage C by latches 22, 22' and are provided with abutment-screws 20, 20<SP>1</SP> for engaging a pivoted buffer, and a line-locking lever 13 on the centre-stop 11. A long spring I is connected to lugs 31, 31<SP>1</SP> on the stops G, G<SP>1</SP> and passes over pulleys 33, 33<SP>1</SP> which are mounted on ballbearings and, to prevent interference between adjacent parts of the spring, are arranged at an inclination. The latch 22 is provided with a roller 28 for co-operation with a releasing-bail J which is mounted on trunnions 43, 44 and is provided with a pin 50 engaging a cam-slot 49 in a finger-lever 52. Normally, the finger-lever abuts on an adjustable stop 53, Fig. 14, and a recess 55 engages the pin 50 to maintain the bail out of contact with the roller 28. When the finger-lever is rocked, the bail releases the latch 22 and the spring I pulls the stop G into contact with the centre-stop. The cam-slot 49 is formed with a recess 56 which co-operates with the pin 50 to maintain the bail and consequently the latch in the release-position. A spring may cooperate with a flat on the finger-lever to prevent accidental movement thereof. The latch 22<SP>1</SP> is associated with a similar releasing-device comprising a roller 28<SP>1</SP>, bail J<SP>1</SP>, pin 50<SP>1</SP> and fingerlever 52<SP>1</SP>.
