Abstract
843,696. Typewriters &c. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Dec. 27, 1956 [Dec. 29, 1955], No. 39309/56. Class 100(4) An escapement mechanism for a typewriter carriage has a pawl 36, Fig. 2a, mounted for pivotal movement only about a pin 38 and spring-held in engagement with the rack 30 and a lever 32 which co-operates with trip mechanism 24 to disengage pawls 34, 36 from the rack 30, pawl 34 subsequently disengaging the lever 32 from the pawl 36 to allow the latter, after carriage movement, to re-engage the rack. As a type lever 2, Fig. 1, moves to the printing position, lever 24 is rocked about 26 through linkages 22, 18. The lever 24, Fig. 2a, rocks the lever 32 which lifts the pawl 34 out of engagement with the rack 30. The pawl 36 is also lifted but the pawl 34 disengages first. On disengaging, pawl 34 is spring urged to the right and down into engagement with the next tooth, the end remote from the rack aligning with a lug 33 of the lever 32. The rack now pushes the pawl 34 and the lever 32 to the left as the pawl 36 has also been disengaged from the rack. In moving to the left lever 32 releases pawl 36 to re-engage the rack 30. Back-spacing mechanism. A back-space pawl 60, Fig. 3, moved by linkages 54, 56, 78, 76, Fig. 1, and driven by a well-known roller and cam assembly, moves the rack to the right in Fig. 3.
