Abstract
474,997. Typewriters. AKT.-GES. VORM. SEIDEL & NAUMANN, and BENZING, H. July 2, 1936, No. 18396. [Class 100 (iv)] Type - lever actions.-A noiseless type - lever action comprises type-levers positively moved into a " ready " position by the key-levers, in which position the key-levers are stopped, the type-levers continuing to move towards the printing position under momentum, independently of the key-levers and against the action of a spring, which does not exert a returning force on the keylevers. The type-lever 1, Fig. 2, is linked at 2a to an intermediate lever 3a, pivoted at 4 and operated by a link 10, a rocking lever 7 and the key-lever 6. To prevent the lever 7 being raised from the rolling surface 14 when the lever 1 moves faster than the lever 6, a pin 25 is provided on a tail 23 of the lever 3a and runs on a curved edge 26 of a tail 27 of the lever 6. The edge 26 is so shaped that the system of levers is locked together and there can be no noisy play in any position. The stroke of the key-lever 6 is limited by an adjustable stop in the form of an eccentric 28 secured to the tail 27. The eccentric 28 and pin 25 move in the same direction, though at different speeds so that there is no shock when the key-lever is arrested. The type-lever is connected to lever 3a through a sub-lever 31, pivoted to lever 3a and having a lost-motion connection therewith comprising a pin 32 and padded aperture 33. When lever 3a is checked further motion of the type-lever is retarded either by lever 31 pressing against a spring 35 on the lever 33, or by a spring 22a, which also operates the universal, bar and is coupled to lever 31 or 3a, or by both. In a portable typewriter action the key 44, Fig. 6, operates parallel levers 46, 47. A bell-crank lever 52 is pivoted to an arm 51 of the lever 47 and coupled thereto by pin 55 and slot 54. One arm of the lever 52 engages the resiliently mounted universal bar 57 and the other operates the type-lever 41 through a link 58. A spring 61 is stretched between the link 58 and typelever 41. The depression of the key 44 is arrested by the engagement of an adjustable eccentric stop 65 with the lever 47. The momentum movement of the type-lever 41 is then braked by the spring 61 and bar 57, acting on the independently moving lever 52. On the return movement of the levers the lever 46 is overtaken by a stop 63 before the typelever strikes its seating 64.
