Specication of Letters Patent.
To all Iwhom t may concern:
Be it known that I, Nils H. ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Type- Writing Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. j v
This invention relates to typewriting machines and with regard t0 certain more specific features thereof, to improvements in type actions and associated and coacting parts.
One lof the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple and practical type action which will be eicient in use and reliable in operation. Another object is to provide a mechanism of the above character having few parts which will be cheap to manufacture and easy to assemble. A further object is to provide a type action which will be rapid in operation and .peculiarly applicable to the silently operating machine. A further object is to provide a typewriting machine with a plurality of type actions of the above-mentioned character compactly arranged to permit the use of a relatively .larger number of printing characters. A further object is to provide practical means for so' mounting the parts as to enhance their ease of movement and to reduce wear.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.A
The invention .accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elementsV and arrangement of parts which will be exemplied in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the Scopeof the application of which will be indicated in the following claims.

Referring to Fig. 1 more in detail, in which one form of type action is shown as applied to a noiseless type-writin machine to which it is particularly adap a platen roller l is mounted on a carriage 2, .between the end plates of which and adjacent the platen roller extends a lat sheet metal -platen 4 3 adapted to take up the pressure exerted by the type 4. The swinging or curvilinearly movable type carriers 5 are actuated in the usualmanner by a key 9 in the keyboard of the machine through an intervening system of power-multiplying and speed oontrol devices comprising a series of links and levers so arranged as tomove the type carrier rearward at a gradually increasing,-
followed by a gradually decreasing, rate of movement, whereby the type silentlyv coact with the platen and produce the printing impression by pressure in contra-distinction to the impact .or blow exerted by many forms of commercial machines. As the type 4 move to the normal printing plane at Vthe end of their limited range of movement they coact with a type guide 6 which maintains perfect aline'ment and equi-distant spacing of the printed characters.
The platen carriage 2 is mounted upon a shift rail 7 which is ladapted to be moved upward or downward from its normal intermediate position by suitable shift mechanism, not herein shown, connected with the lower ends of links 8, one at each end of the shift rail. As the shift mechanism forms no part-of the present invention, eX- cept in so far as it may broadly enter into certain combinations, it is thought that a specific disclosure and description thereof know-ni. carriage 2 isi-driven by a may be on'i'itted as its broad function is well spring driving drum in the usual manner, and its intermittent letter-feed movement is controlled through a rack and pinion plained, with a movable part of the type action, whereby it is operated at the proper time and frequency to obtain the desired letter-feed travel of the carriage.
Each key lever 15 is preferably composed of two parts of di'erent thicknesses of material, one or which 15 is riveted or otherwise secured to the lower part of thev other 16. The upper part 16 of the key lever is pivotally mounted at its rear end 17 to a suitable fulerum bar 18 and is provided with a downwardly extended arm 20, to which a return spring21 is secured. The front end of the part 16 is provided with a forwardly extending hook 22 adapted to engage a silencing pad 23 to arrest its movement after traversing a predetermined distance. This construction provides a resilient and less tiring touch, as the key lever 1s arrested without noticeable impact or concussion. f
'ljhe type carrier 5, at the other end of the action, is pivoted at 24 in a comb member or segment 25 which is provided for each action with a hole 26 at -its upper forward part, through which a curved guiding arm 27 integrally formed with the type carrier 5 is adapted to reciprocate curvilinearly. This arm or projection 27 serves to guide the type carrier in the desired direction and prevent lateral movement. The type carri-er has, connected at its upper end, immediatelyl 'back of the type head 4 at the point 28, a link 3() which, when the machine is at rest, extends Vdownward and `t`orward toward the keyboard. ln order to reduce the width of the joint between the rear end of this link andthe type carrier, the link is made to it an opening in the type carrier and is held from lateral movement by two very thin washers 31 (Fig. 6) which are secured by a small rivet 28 headed over sutiiciently to V.take any strain to which the oint may be subjected. To the opposite end ot this link 30 is secured another link 32, the opposite end of which is pivotally secured t'o a stationary yblock 33 adjustably mounted in the front wall of the machine by means of an adjusting screw 34, the adjustment being held by a. set-screw 35. These links 30 and 32 form a toggle adapted to move to extended position when the action is operated and thus positively limit the throw of the type and bring it to rest at the normal printing plane independently ofthe platen. Near arrasar the middle of the second-mentioned link 32, which is of the duplex type, is another short, horizontally disposed link 36 extending toward the front of the machine and pivotally connected at its vforward end 37 to the upper arm 38 of a bell crank lever pivotally mounted at its elbow 40 in a second 'block or hanger 41, adjustable ley-means of a screw 42 engaging the lower transverse portion of the front wall.' The short link 36 and the upper arm 38 of the bell crank lever form a second toggle which is also adapted to move to extended posit-ion on operation of the aetion and coacts with the first-mentioned toggle at an angle thereto. Most of these links and particularly the bell crank 38 are preferably made from stamped sheet metal ofa resilient character and are arranged in pairs, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4. rlhis arrangement not only increases the strength of the mechanism to withstand the powerful pressure exerted on the paper, but also provides a resiliency in action facilitating rebound of the type carriers and more even movement free from binding at their points of pivotal connection. To avoid confusion, these pairs of links will be considered as being single elements.
Also pivotally mounted on the adjustable block 41, at the same point as the bell crank lever 38, is a clip or lever 43 having a bentover portion 44 adapted to engage the rear portion of the upper arm 38 of the bell crank lever, as shown more clearly in Fig, 4. The rearwardly projecting arm 43 of this clip is pivotally connected at 45 to the upper end of a pull wire or connection 46, the opposite end of which is pivotally connected with the upper part of the key lever 16. This clip forms with the bell crank lever a vloose connection o r lost-motion device as shown more clearly in the detail view, Fig. 4. rlhis loose connection does not involve a disconnection of the parts, and consequently does not interfere with the rapid repetition of any single character or require a complete return of the key lever to normal position under suchconditions of operation.
4its the noiseless machine performs the printing operation by pressure in contradistinction to impact, the time actually used in making the impression may be longer than that required in impact machines. ln order to avoid a tendency to blur during the actual printing operation and for other reasons, it is desirable to provide, in the intermediate mechanism between the type carrier and tlnx key lever, means which will accelerate the actual printing operation and withdraw the type from the surface of the paper before the escapement permits movement of the carriage. Therefore, at the upper end ot' the upper arm of the bell crank lever and pret'- era'bly integrally formed therewith is a weight or momentum accumulator 47 and at the forward end of the lower arm 48 isY a bent-over portion 50 which is designed to engage a silencing pad or stop bar 51, mounted on brackets 52 and adjustable to any desired point, thereby to regulate'the swing of the bell crank lever.
The momentum accumulator isA adapted ,to acquire a certain momentum that is to store and expend energy, to carry the same rearwardly or 'in the direction of movement of the type to accelerate the actualprinting operation.
At this point it may be noted that the weight has a certain turning movement about the pivot point 40 as the key lever is depressed. The lforce thus exerted is very slight at first, but as the action approaches the dotted line positions (shown in Fig. l) there is a very decided tendencyv for the weight to turn about the pivot, thereby assisting in the straightenin of the toggles. This force may be increased by lengthening the distance from the centerof the weight to the point 40. j j
As the links of the toggle assumev a straightened position, the relative movement of the ends of the links decreases in rate of speed and the pressure exerted thereby is multiplied; consequently the type carrier moves forward during the first part of its movement with a gradually increasing speed, and during the last part with a gradually decreasing speed, but with greatly increased pressure. It will thus be noted that the type carrier is transposed quickly to a position adjacent the printing plane and with a speed gradually but rapldly reduced during the linal portion of its travel. Thereafter and withouta distinct cessation the carrier is moved to effect printing.

Thus, the rotary momentum of the weight is converted into. straight line pressure of the type by the intermediate mechanism. When in final position, the link 36 and arm 38 of the bell crank lever are also )in a straight line, and in themselves form a second toggle which no't only increases the pressure exerted -by the type carrier, but also limits the movements of the movable parts. The combination of toggles shown also properly control the speed of the type carrier whereby -it rapidly decreases at the 4end of the stroke and prints by pressure in contradistinction'to impact.
After the bell crank lever has been brought to rest, there is a reverse force brought into play to break the toggles due in part t0 the reversal of this condition, and there is thus `produced in this type .of action a real live'. i' l with acurved universal bar 54 extending beneath the bracket adjacent the segment supporting the type carriers, as shown in Fig. 2.
This universal bar yis so mounted onan arrangement of parallel links 55` and 56 as to -give all parts of it a substantially 'equal and vertical movement. Connected to a shaft 57, A to whlch one of the sets of links 56 is secured, is a downwardl extending arm 58, the lower end 60 of which is connected, by a pull wire 61, with the escapement rocker 1.4.
From the above it will be clear that by depressing the key at the forwardend of thev key lever, motion will be transmitted,
through the pull wire. 46, to rotate the clip or lever 43, which will in turn rotate the bell crank lever 38 aboutits pivotal support 40. However, as these links assume extended position, the link 36 and the upper arm 38 of the bell' material and return spring 62, will tend to return the parts to normal position shown in Fig. l until its rearward movement is arrested by a silencing pad G3 at the upper part of the segment.
From the above it will be seen that the momentum accumulator takes up the energy applied to the key lever in operation and subsequently delivers the energy to the type carrier to lperform its printing function after the movement of the key lever has been arrested by the stop.
While the degree of impression is regulated to a certain extent according to the length of throw of the type carrier by the adjustment of the block 33, the striking of a key lever with a greater force, as when making a plurality of carbon copies, will be multiplied to some extent in an action of this kind, for the momentum of the momentum accumulator will increase according to the speed or force with which the key is struck.
As the momentum accumulator is free to continue its rearward movement after the key lever has been arrested in its downward movement, due to the loose connection between the bell crank lever and the link 43, it will swing rearward to the dot-dash position, thus straightening both sets of toggles and effecting the printing in a rapid and noiseless manner and with great pressure.
`When the type bar is closeiy adjacent the platen, or just prior to the moment when the turned-over ears a4 and the upper arm 38 of the bell crank lever separate, the lower projection 53 0n the type carrier coacts with the universal bar to actuate the same and transmit motion through the links 56 and universal bar rock shaft 57 to the dog rocker 14 and trip the escapement. The printing operation, however, is so rapid that the in-y ertia ot the carriage will not be overcome until after printing is eifected.
Referring now to the modification shown in Fig. 2, the general principles of operation of the several mechanisms are substantially the same, although the intervening mechanism between the key lever and the type bar has been changed in order to obtain a very light initial touch. ln this form, as in the one previously described, each type bar 5 is pivotally mounted in a segment 25 and is guided'in its reciprocating movements by a curved projection or.

At the upper end of the type bar, preferably at the point 28, is connected a link 30, the opposite end of which is connected to a second link 32, which in turn has its opposite end pivotally mounted in the rearward end of an adjustable bracket 33 mounted in the front wall 69 of the frame of the machine. rlhese links together constitute a toggle, adapted to exert great pressure upon and also limit the rearward movenient of the type bar. `Connected with the middle part of this second link 32 is a short link 36, the opposite end 70 of which is pivotally connected to the upper arm 7l of an Il -shaped member or bell crank lever pivotally mounted at 72 on an adjustable bracket 73 supported by a second transverse part or brace 74 in the machine. rThe lower or short arm 75 of the bell crank lever is provlded with a turned-over portion 7 6 adapted to coact with a sto a bar 77 to limit the rearward movement ot its upper arm. rllhis stop bar is rigidly secured to the transverse part or brace 74 supporting the adjustable bracket 73.
'To the under side of the upper transverse brace 69 in the frame of the machine is a third bracket or hanger 78 adapted to support a bell crank lever 80, the short arm 81 of which is pivotally connected with the upper end of the pull wire 82, the lower end of which is pivotally connected to the forward part of the key lever 16. rllhe upper arm 71 of the first bell crank lever and the lower arm of the second bell crank lever are adapted to have a rocking or heel and toe movement as the key lever 1G is depressed, inwhich both parts move to-v ward the rear of the machine. movement of the key lever and type carrier similar to that above explained in connection with the first modiication. 1t will be perfectly clear frem the drawings that a rearward movement of the upper arm 7l of the bell crank lever will tend to straighten the toggle formed thereby, together with the short link 36, as well as the toggle intermediate the type bar and the adjustable hanger 33. During this rearward movement the momentum accumulator 47 as before acquires a certain momentum suiiicient to carry the ,rocking parts oit' the bell crank levers out of engagement with each other after the downward movement of the key lever has been arrested. This momentum is sufficient to carry the type from a point closely adjacent the platen shown in dotted lines into contact therewith to e-i'ect printing, as shown by the dotdash line. Simultaneously with the printing moment the turned-over ear 7G at the lower part oitl the bell crank lever coacts with the cushion stop 77 which, with the resiliency of the material of which the action is composed, and the aid of the return spring 83 intermediate the type carrier and the link, will return the-parts, or at least move the type out of engagement with the platen independently of the release or any subsequent movement of the .key lever. In actual operation, however, the key lever would be released and return to the position shown, in which case the parts of the. type action would all return to their normal inactive positions..l
The lower end of the type carrier 5 is adapted to coact with the curved universal bar54 in the manner described in connection with Fig. l. This will actuate the universal bar and, through the connections 61 with the escapement rocker 14:, trip the escapement dog at the proper moment. It is to be understood in connection with this universal bar mechanism in both embodiments that it is not operated until after the movement of the key lever has been arrested. This serves to make a spacing of the carriage for succeeding characters independent of the release operation of the key lever. In other words, if the operator should hold the key lever down the type carrier would move to the printing point under the action of the momentum accumulator and operate the escapement mechanism through the universal bar and return to a point Where the bell crank levers Would again engage the coacting actuating member, thus spacing the carriage independently of the subsequenty movement of the key lever. o
As the operation and method of use of a type action of this character is `believed to be perfectly clear from the above description, a reiteration thereofl is believed to be unnecessary.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a curvilinearly movable type carrier, and means to effect a printing movement thereof, said means including a momentum accumulator associated with said typeI carrier for effecting a relatively short movement of the latter during a relatively long movement of said momentum accumulator.
2. In a typewriting machine, in combination, anormally retracted type carrier movable upward and rearward toward its printing plane, and operating and speed-controlling means to effect such movement, said It will be seen that the present inventionmeans including -a momentum accumulator having a speed-reducing and power-increasing operative connection with the type carrier.
3. In' a typewriting machine, in combination, a front strike swinging type carrier, and operating# means toI effect a Continuous movement thereof to its printing plane,

In a pressure-printing typewritin-g machine, in combination, a curvilinearly movable type carrier, and means to effect a quick transposition'thereof to a position adjacent its printing plane and at a speed gradually reduced during the printing portion of its travel, said means including a momentum accumulator associated with said type carrieiin a relation to eect the printing movement thereof.
11. ln a pressure-printing typevvriting machine, in combination, a curvilinearly movable type carrier, and means to effect a lo luick transposition thereof to a position adjacent its printing plane and at a speed gradually reduced duringv the final portion of said transposition and uninterruntedly to move said type carrier to a printing limit established by said means, said means including a momentum accumulator operatively associated with said type carrier for eidecting the nal movement thereof to said printing limit.
12. ln a pressure-printing typewriting machine, in combination, a curvilinearly movable type carrier, an actuating key therefor, operative connecting means between said key land said type carrier to effect a -quick transposition of the latter toa position adjacent its printing plane and at a speed gradually reduced during the :nal portion of its travel, a stop to arrest said actuating` key, said connecting means including a lostmotion device to permit subsequent independent movement of said type carrier, and a momentum accumulator associated with said means in a relation to eect such subsequent movement of said type carrier after the arrest of said actuating key.
13. ln a pressure-printing typeiwriting machine, in combination, a curvilinearly movable type carrier, an actuating key therefor, operative connecting means between -said key'and said type carrier to eect a quick transposition of the latter to a position adjacent its printing plane and at a speed gradually reduced during the final portion of its travel, a stop to arrest said actuating key, said connecting means including a lost-motion device to permit subsequent independent movement of said type carrier, al momentum accumulator operatively associated With said means for eifecting such subsequent movement of said type iiaeai carrier, and a universal bar positioned to be actuated by said type carrier during movement of the latter effected by said momentum accumulator. v
14. ln a typewriting machine, in combination, a curvilinearly movable type carrier', energy-storing means, an actuating key to effect a storage of energy in said means, and means to convert gradually all of suchystored energy into relatively sloW printing movement of said type carrier. 1
15. ln a typewriting machine,in combination, a Vcurvilinearly movable type carrier, an inking ribbon positioned in the path of travel of said type carrier adjacent the limit of movement thereof, energy-storing means, an actuating key to eect a-storage of energy in said means, and means to convert gradually such stored energy into relatively slow and forceful movement of said type carrier while the latterl is in contact with said ribbon.
i6. ln a typewriting machine, in combination, a pivotally mounted type carrier, an actuating key therefor, and operative connecting means between said parts including a normally flexed toggle, one member of necting means between said parts including a normally flexed toggle, one member of which has a pivotal connection with said type carrier adjacent the free end thereof and another member of which has an axis adjustable to vary the'position of said type earrier when the toggle is extended.
18. ln a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a Swingin type carrier having a printing travel liiiited independently of the platen, a key lever, means to arrest the downward movement of said key lever, a toggle connected at one end to said type carrier, a momentum accumulator associated with said toggle and adapted to straighten the toggle after the key lever-has been arrested, and resilient means associated with said toggle to withdraw the type carrier from the end of its path of travel independently of the return/movement of the key lever.
19. ln a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging type carrier having a lim- `ited path of travel to a normal printing plane, a key lever having a limited path of' plane, a key lever having a limited path of travel adapted to actuate said type carrier, intermediate mechanism comprising a plu- 'l rality of toggles to control the rate and extent of travel of said type carrier, means to straighten said toggles to effect the printing i- 'after `the key lever has been arrested in its downward movement, and spring'means to return the parts to normal position. y
21. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinglng type carrier having' a limited path of travel, a key lever therefor, and intervening mechanism including a plurality of toggles one of which is secured to said typecarrier at one end and to a relatively ixed part of the machine at its other end, the other toggle being directly connected with one of the links of said first-mentioned togglel and adapted to -straighten the same as it assumes straightened position itself.
22. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging type carrier, a key lever therefor, means to arrest the downward movement of the key lever, and-intervening i mechanism to-transmit motion from one to theother, including a plurality of toggles,
one of which is directly connected with one of the links of the other and adapted to straighten ,the same as it assumes straightened position itself after the downward movement of the key lever has been arrested.
23. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging type carrier, a key lever therefor, means to arrest thel downward .'movement of said Akey-lever, intervening mechanism to transmit motion from one to the other including av plurality., of toggles one of which is directly secured at one end to -said type carrier, the other toggle being connected with one of the links of said first mentioned toggle and adapted to straighten .the same as it assumes straightened position itself subsequent to the arresting of the downward movement of said key lever, and means directly connected withl one of said toggles for moving both of said toggles' to means to arrest the downward movement of said key lever, intervening' mechanism to transmit motion-from one to the other, 1n-
i cluding a plurality of toggles one of which the latter to straightened -position after the downward movement of the key lever has been arrested, and a lost motion device ntherefor, means to arrest the downward movement ofI the key lever, intervening mechanism to transmit motion from one t0 the other, including a plurality of toggles, a momentum accumulator directly connected -with one of said toggles adapted to move both of the toggles to straightened position after the downward movement of the key lever has been arrested, and a universal bar to 'be actuated by one of said parts after the downward movement of said key lever has been arrested.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging type carrier, a key lever therefor, a stop to arrest the downward movement of the key lever, intervening mechanism betweenl said parts, including a toggle, a bell crank lever, a momentum accumulator directly connected with one of said parts for moving the toggle to straightened position after the key lever has been arrested, and a universal bar to be actuated directly by said type carrier.
27. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging t" e carrier having a limited range of movement, a key lever therefor, means to arrest the downward movement of the key lever, intervening mechanism, including a toggle, between said type carrier and a liXed part of the machine, and
-a second toggle including a bell crank lever -a straightened position.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging type carrier having a limited range of movem t, ba key lever therefor, a stop to limit the wnward movement of the4 key lever, intervening mechanism including a toggle between the type carrier and a' fixed portion of the machine, a second toggle connected with said first-mentioned toggle, said second-mentioned toggle being formed-by one arm of a bell 'crank lever, 4arconnection therewith and with the key lever whereby as the key lever is depressed said toggles will tend to assume straightened position, and means associated with one of said toggles to move them to straightened position after the downward movement 0f the key vlever has been arn l nation, a' swinging type carrier having a as 1t assumes straightened position itself, aj momentum accumulator directly connected 'with one of said toggles for moving both of limited range of movement, a ke;7 lever therefor, means to limit the downward movement of the key lever,y intervening mechanism including ltwo toggles, one of which includes a bell crank lever, the bell crank lever being connected with said keylever whereby as the key lever is depressed said toggles will tend to assume straightened position, means associated with one of said toggles to complete their movement to straightened .position after the downward movement of the key lever has been arrested, and a universal bar to be actuated by one of said parts.
30. ln a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging type carrier having a limited range of movement,y a key lever therefor, means to limit the downward movement of the keylever,v intervening mechanism including two toggles, one of which includes a bell crank lever, the bell crank lever being connected with saidkey lever whereby 'as the key lever is depressed said toggles will tend to assume straightened poy sition, means associated with one of said toggles to complete their movement -to 'straightened position after the downward movement of the key lever has been arrested., and a universal bar in the path of travel of said type carrier to be actuated thereby.
3l. ln a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging type carrier having a limited range of movement, a key lever therefor, a stop for the downward movement of the key lever, intervening mechanism including a toggle between the type carrier and a fixed part of the machine, a second toggle connected with said iirstsmentioned toggle and acting at an angle thereto, a bell crank lever included in said second-mentioned toggle, and connected with said key lever, means associated with one of said toggles to complete its movement to straightened position after the downward movement of the key lever has been arrested, and a universal bar to be actuated directly by one of said parts.
32. ln a typewriting machine, in combi nation, a swinging type carrier having a limited range of movement, a key lever therefor, a stop for the downward mfovement of the key lever, intervening mechanism including a toggle between the type carrier and a Xed pt ofrthevmachine, a second toggle connected with said lirst-mentioned toggle and acting at an angle thereto, a bell crank lever included in said second-mentioned toggle, and connected with said key lever, means associated with one of said toggles to complete its movement to straightened position after the downward movement of the key lever has been arrested, and a universaly bar to be actuated directly by the p type carrier after the downward movement of the key lever has been arrested.
33. ln a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging type carrier having a limited range of movement, a key lever therefor, a stop for the downward movement 0f the key lever, intervening mechanism in-A neiaeei cluding a toggle having a free end connected with the type carrier, a second toggle con* nected with one of the links of the firstmentioned toggle, means associated with said toggles to complete their movement to straightened position after the downward movement of the key lever has been arrested, a universal bar t0 'be actuated by one of said parts, and a lost motion device in said mechanism to permit said toggle to straighten and return to flexed position independent of the release of the key lever, said universal bar being actuated after the downward move- 4ment of the key lever has been arrested.v
34. ln a typewriting machine, in combinai tion, a swinging type carrier, a key lever therefor, means to arrest the downward movement of the key lever, intervening mechanism including a bell crank lever loosely connected with said key lever to permit independent movement, and means associated with one of said parts to accomplish the independent movement of the bell crank lever to movc the type carrier to printing position after the downward movement of the key lever has been arrested.
35. ln a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging type carrier having a limited range of movement, a key lever therefor, a stop for arresting the dowrnvardv movement of the key lever, intervening mechanism including a bell crank lever, a lost motion device between the bell crank lever and the key lever'to permit independent movement, and means associated with said bell crank lever to accomplish an independent movement thereof to move the type carrier to printing position after the downwardlmovement of the key lever has been arrested.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging type carrier, a key lever therefor, a toggle connected with said type carrier, a second toggle connected with said first-mentioned toggle adapted to assume straightened position, said second-mentioned toggle being partially formed'bv one arm of a bell crank lever, and a stop for the other arm of the bell crank lever to prevent overthrow of the toggles.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, -a swinging type carrier, a key lever therefor, a toggle connected with said type carrier, a second toggle connected with said first-mentioned toggle adapted to assume straightened position, said second-mentioned toggle lbeing formed by one arm of a bell crank lever, a stop for the other arm of the bell crank lever to prevent overthrow of the toggles, and means associated with one of said toggles to urge the toggles into straightened position after the downward movement of the key lever has ceased.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a swinging type carrier, a key lever therefor, intervening mechanism to gradually increase and then gradually decrease the rate of movement whereby it silently coacts with the platen, and a universal bar in the-path of travel of said type carrier.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging type carrier, a key lever therefor, intervening mechanism to gradually increase and then gradually decrease its rate of movement whereby it silently coacts with the platen, a perforated segment on which said type carrier is mounted, and a, guide arm on said type carrier passing through a perforation whereby lateral movement of the type carrier is prevented.

In a typewriting machine, in combil nation, a swinging type carrier, a key lever therefor, intervening mechanism to gradually increase and then gradually decrease its rate of movement whereby it silently coacts with the platen, a projection on said type carrier and a universal bar above said projection to be actuated thereby.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a swinging type carrier, an actuating key therefor having its travel limited independently of said type carrier, operative connecting means between said key and said type carrier for effecting movement of the latter to a position adjacent its printing plane and at a speed gradually reduced during the nal portion of its travel, said means including a momentum accumulator associated with said type carrier in a relation to effect printing movement thereof after said actuating key reaches its limit of travel, and a universal bar in the path of movement of a part of said type carrier andpositioned to be actuated therebyduring the printing movement thereof effected by said momentum accumulator.

In a typewritin machine, in combination, a plurality o radially arranged swinging type carriers, a supporting segment therefor having a pluralityof apertures, and curved guiding means associated concentrically with said type carriers and passing through said apertures to prevent lateral displacement of the former, said guiding means being of a dimension to coact with said segment in all positions of said type carriers.

In a front strike typewritin machine, in lcombination, a platen, a plura ity of radially disposed swinging type carriers normally disposed at an angle approximately l 45 degrees to the horizontal, and operating means -for said type carriers including toggle links to control the speed and pressure of said type carriers when actuated, and to limit thev printing movement thereof substantially independently of said platen.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a pivotally mounted type carrier, an actuating key therefor, and operative connecting means between said parts including a power transmitting member having a pivotal connection with said type carrier adjacent the free end of the latter and arranged for disposal at substantially right angles thereto at the printing moment.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a pivotally mounted type carrier, an actuating key therefor, and operating connecting means between said parts including a thrustmember having a pivotal connection j with said type carrier and a pull member having s connection with saidkey and a bell crank lever operatively interposed between said thrust and pull members, said thrust member being further connected and a1'- ranged to extend at substantially right angles to the body of said type carrier when the latter reaches printing position.
