Connecticut, have invented certain new and. useful lm 'n'ovcments in Typeriting Machines, of which the following isa full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. i

One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a practical and ellicient type action for typewriting machines.
Another object isto provide a silently acting type action with an easy dip to the operating key and a prompt return to normal position.
Another object is to provide a type action inwhich rebounding of the movable parts will be eliminated.
Another object is to provide a simple form of type action which will be cheap to manufacture and easy to install.
A further object to provide an improved form of'universal bar mechanism adapted-to be used with the present form of type action although not limited thereto.
A further object-is to provide sa light but substantial carriage mechanisn'i.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part pointed out hereinafter.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinaftcrset forth, and the scope of the application of which. will be indicated in the following claims.

While the present invention is illustrated and describedwith reference to that form of typewriting machines known as the noiseless typewriterj it is, oat-course, to be understood that various features herein described and claimed, while 'iarticularly adaptable to pressure-operated:machines. may be applied to other iori'ns of type ac tlous. and in other connectioi'is as well.
Referring now to these drawings in detail, and particularly I igs. land 2, 1 represents a platen or paper-roller mounted upon a rod 2, and, in the present case, being prelerably provided with alfiat metallic platen 3 adapted to receive the compressive or squeezing action exerted upon the paper by type l carried by a.typc member a. This type member is mounted upon the forward end of a reciprocating type-carrier 6, having rcarv'ardly extending guide legs, the upper one being the longer, and in the form herein shown is provided with a normal or central type with upper and lower case type adjacent thereto. The uppcr and lower parts of the type member 5 are provided With forwardly projecting type-protecting means 7 which extends slightly in advance of the face of the type In order that the purpose of these type-protecting members may be the more readily understood, it may be explained that in the noiseless typewriter, as well as some other makes, the ty ie-carriers arearranged radially to the printing point; those type-carriers at the extreme outer edge of, the type segment bea vertical plane disposed substantially at an angle of .45. to the printing line. Now, should one type-carrier be actuated by one hand and moved. to the printing position while a second. type action at the opposite side of the segment is still at the printing [position, not having been released by the other hand, it willbe seen that the type members will contact with one another, to the probable injury of the last actuated 'type action.
' Therefore, if the type members are provided prevent a tilting motion of the type-carrier when actuated. The lower part of the typecarrier may be cutaway, as shownin the drawings, to avoid unnecessary friction, if so desired. In order to prevent the typebar from tilting sidewise when in extended position, as shown in Fig. 2, a comb member 11 projects upwardly fromthe bed-plate 9 and engages the sides of the type-carrier in the manner shown incross-section in Fig. 5. The type-carrier 6 is connected with an actuating key-lever 12 by intermediate mechanism including a toggle cam link 13, which, with an upwardly swinging oscillatory cam member 14,-is adapted to form a toggle, shown in extended position in Fig. 2, for positively limiting the movement of the type-carrier, thereby creating a normal printing plane, relatively to which the platen is movable by mechanism such as shown for example in Patent No. 879,107, dated February 11, 1908, to Kidder and Sponsel. This toggle cam member 14' is pivotally mounted at 15 on an adjustable cam block 16 secured to the front wall of the machine. This cam blockmay be adusted in the direction of the path of travel of the type-carrier by means of set screws tel-mines the adjusted position.
17 and 18, the former clamping the adjustmg block to the frame, while the latter deupper part of the cam block 16 is pivotally mounted a bell-crank lever or toggle-actuat-v ing member 19, the shorter arm'of which sconnected by-means of an adjustable pullvgire 20 with "the key-lever 12, while the longer arm carriesya roller 21 adapted to form a rolling connection with the oscillatory cam member 14 by engaging a cam slot 22 therein. This cam slot 22 is gradually curved through the larger part ofits length and terminates near one end in a' sharply defiebted cam portion indicated at 23. This cam slot is of such a configura- .-,,tion as t6, caus .,a gradually increasing rate ;of movement toward the platen during the On the first-part of the movement of the key-lever and a gradually decreasing rate of movement, terminating in a compressive or toward and from the platen is positivelycontrolled. This cam slot 22 is also provided at each end with an extended portion known as a cam dwell, the curvature of the cam at these points being concentric with an arc struck from the pivotal point of the bell-crank lever as a center. In Fig. 3 the type action is shown in extended position in. full lines, the dotted position of the bellcrank lever 19 denoting the extent of additional movement into the cam dwell permitted thispart and also the key-lever without in any way alfecting the movement of the type-carrier.
Referring to Fig. 4*. of the drawing, it will be seen that the adjusting block 16 is bifurcated at its forward end and holds the oscillatory cam member 14 therebetween. This cam member has a rearwardly projecting portion or horn 2 1- which is adapted closely to it between the sides of the block 16, whereby a tilting motion of the camis counterbalance the weight, of the pull-wire 20 and the key-lever 12, when returning to normal position. In this manner a more rapid return of the parts to normal position is attained and also the possibility of the type carrier or other parts of the actuating mechanism rebounding, as might ocour in mechanisms where the oscillatory cam member swings upwardly when returning to normal position, is eliminated.
The key-lever 12 is pivotally mounted upona transversely disposed shaft 25, to
which is also pivotally supported a universal bar 26 by means of .rearwardly extending arms 27. S rings 28' and 28 en- -gage,respectively, t e key-lever and the engaging a pad 33 ontheupper'surface of a the universal bar 26, thereby silently to arrest the upward movement of the bar when returning to normal position.
By pivota'lly mounting the universal bar and key-lever upon the same pivot the friction between the surfaces of the key-levers which oscillate and the universal bar contacting therewith, which reciprocates, is eliminated.
In order that the actuating mechanism interposed between the type-carrier and keylever may be silently arrested'upon its return n'iovement, an abutment 34 provided with silencing means such as a pad 35 is adapted to be engaged by a projecting arm 36 on the oscillatory cam member whereby this part will return to normal position without impact or concussion.
' 'lhe operation of this modification, it is thought, may be understood from the above description, but it will, nevertheless, be stated, in brief, as follows: When a keylever is actuated, it not only depresses the universal bar 26, thereby to actuate the escapement mechanism, not herein shown, and space the carriage in the usual manner, but also draws the pull-wire20 downwardly, thereby oscillating the bell-crank lever 19 to cause the roller 20 carried thereby to traverse the cam slot in the cam member 14 and move the type-carrier forward to the printing position. When the toggle formed by the cam member and link 13 is in extended position, the type will have reached the normal printing plane. It is, of course, to be understood that the platen and the typemembers are movable relatively to each other, in order that, when manifolding, the outer sheet may be disposed in the normal printing plane.
Referring now, briefly to Fig. 6, the means for silently arresting the return of the actuating mechanism to normal position comprises a stop member or pad 37' position'edupon the movable link 13 and which is adapted to be engaged by a projecting.
- lug 38 on the oscillatory cam member 14. This will not only silently arrest the parts on return to normal position, but also prevents the rear end of the type-carrier from riding upwardly on its return movement, as a downward pressure will be exerted upon the pad 37 by the cam member when returning to norinalposition. This same mechanism is shown in actuated position in Fig. 8, and otherwise is substantially the same as the action shown in Fig. 1.
In Fig. 7 is shown a somewhat similar type action, in' which the silencing pad'is disposed on a forwardly projecting lug 39 secured to'the frame of the machine. A heel orthe like 40' carried by the link 13 is adapted to engage thispad in the manner herein shown. I

By securing the platen in this manner, with the coiicaved face lying adjacent the platenroller, there will. be no tendency for the platen to move upwardly ordownwardly from a normal position when struck slightly off center, as illustrated in Fig. 8, the dotted line representing the center of a normal impression, while the type therein shown designates a period normally striking below the center of the printing line. It is thus seen that this invention is adapted to accomplish, among others, the objects above set forth in a practical and ellicieiit manner.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely dilierent embodiments of this invenand specific features of the invention lierein described and all statements of the scope of the invention, which, as a matter of language, might be said to fall therebetween.

A typewriter action combining a relatively fixed frame part, 'an actuating lever pivoted thereto having a short arm normally forwardly extending from the lever pivot and a long arm extending oppositely therefrom, a finger lever, a member connected therewith at its lower end and connected with the short arm of said lever, whereby upon depressing said finger lever said actuating lever will be-moved and its long arm elevated, a type carrier adapted to reciprocate, and a power transmitting member having a movement-rate controlling surface aiid interposed between said thereby upwardly and rearwardly to advaiice said type carrier, the parts of said action at opposite sides of the pivot of: the actuating lever tending to'counter-balance cacli'other. 4

A typewriter action combining a relatively fixed part, a link having a connection with said part whereby it may. undergo an angular movement relativelythereto, a pressure operating type carrier connected with said link at a'point remote from its point of connection with ,said part, a'ndga n' iactusting lever of thefirst order,},theex'tremity of one. arm'of said actuating lever bearin on said link at a point intermediate sai two distanced points whereby at its initial movement the link first point as an instantaneous center and its second point will advance at a more rapid rate than the intermediate point.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a key-lever, a type-bar, mechanism be- 1 tween said key-lever and said type-bar for transmitting motion from one to the other including an upwardly swinging cam member for controlling the rate of movement of i tion, a platen, a type carrier having an increasing, followed by a decreasing, rate of movement toward said platen whereby it prints by pressure in contradistinction to impact, a key-lever, and means for trans mitting motion from said key-lever to said ty zie-carrier includingan upwardly swinging cam member adapted to control the said rate of movement of said tvpe-carrier.
8. In a type-writing machine, in combination, a plateina' type carrier having an in.-
will swing about said .-creasing, followed by a decreasing rate of movement towardsaid platen 'whereby it prints by pressure-in contradistinction to impact,:ja key-leve'r,'.and means for transmitting inotion from said key-lever to said type-carrier includingan upwardly swinging cam member, said cam member beingso formed as to positively control the said rate of movement ofsaid type-carrier.
9. A typewriter action of a front strike machine, combining a fixed frame portion, a block adjustable thereon, an actuating lever pivoted thereto having a short arm normally extending upwardly and forwardly,
from the leverpivot' and a lon arm extending downwardly therefrom, a hnger lever, a vertical pull-wire directly,connected therewith at its lower end and directly connected With the extremity of the short arm of said lever, whereby upon depressing said finger leversaid actuating lever will be moved and its long arm elevated, a type carrier adapted to horizontally reciprocate, and a power transmitting member having a curved movement-rate controlling surface-interposed be-' tween said type carrier and the actuating lever and operatlvely connected with the extremity of the longarm of the latter to be impelled thereby upwardly and rlaarwardly to advance said type carrier.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a type-carrier, a platen with which said type-carrier coacts, a member moving upwardly and rearwardly toward the platen when actuated adapted positively to control the movement of said type-carrier, and actuating means for said member 11. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a type -carrier,a platen with which said type-carrier coacts, a key-lever, intermediate mechanism for transmittingmotion from. said key-lever to said type-carrier, includinga toggle, and a bell-crank lever adapted to engage a portion of said toggle and swing the same upwardly into extended position;

In a typewriting machine, in c0mb1na-- tion, a relatively fixed portion of the frame of the machine, a type-carrier, a down wardly moving key-lever, and intermediate mechanism for transmitting mot on from the'key-lever to said type-carrier including upwardly swinging actuating means for positively controllingthe rate of movementof said type-carrier, said actuating means being adjustablv mounted on said relatively fixed portion of the frame of the machine and tending to counterbalance said key lever.

A typewriter action combining a frame portion. a block mounted thereon and capable of adjustment fore and aft of the machine, an actuating lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on said block, a plill wire connected at one end to the forward end of one arm of said lover, a key lever to which the other end of said pull wire is connected, a straight thrust type carrier adapted to reciprocate in a horizontal direction, and-a floating member connected at one end to one end of said type carrier and 0peratively connected at a point remo-te th refrom with said actuating lever, whereby said floating member is moved upwardly and rearwardlyas said key lever 1 s actuated.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a plurality of straight-thrust type carriers having rearwardly extending guideways, and upper and lower guide-plates for said type carriers having a p urality of continuous longitudinal grooves in which guideways of said type carriers are adapted to slide.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a plurality of pressure-operated straight-thrust type-carriers radially disposed from the printing point on said platen, and upper and lower guideplates for said type-carriers having continuous grooves therein in which said type-carriers are adapted to slide.

In a 'typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a plurality of pressure-open ated straight-thrust type earriers radially disposed from the printiiigpoint on said platen, upper and lower fguide plates for said type-carriers having continuous grooves therein in which said type-carriersare adapted to slide, and a comb member associated with one of said plates adapted to engage the sides of said type-carriers.

In a typewritingmachine, in combination, a platen, a plurality of pressure-open ated straight-thrust type-carriers radially disposed from'the printing point on. said platen, upper and lower guide plates for said type-carriers, having continuous grooves therein in which said type-carriers are adapted to slide,,.and a comb member associated with said lower guide plate projecting upwardly to engage the sides of said type -carriers to prevent tilting motion thereof.

In a typewriting machine, in combination, akey-lever, a straight-thrust type-bar, mechanism therebetween for transmitting motion from one to the other including a pivotally mounted bell-crank lever, a pullwire connected with one end of said lever and said key-lever, and, a member adapted to have an upward movement, said member being operatively connected with the other end of said bell-crank lever. A ty ewriter action combining a fixed frame portion, a lever-supporting-block adjustably secured tothe frame portion, an actuating lever pivoted at an intermediate point to said block, a finger lever, a pull wire uprising therefrom and pivoted at its upper end to the upper end of said actuating lever, a floatinglink, and a type carrler operatively connected therewith, the lower end of said actuating lever being operatively connected with said' link whereby upon depressing said finger lever, said link will float upwardly type carrier.

A typewriter action combining a frame portion, a-block adiustably mounted thereon and capable of adjustment fore and aft of the machine, a lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on said block, a pull wire connected at one end to one arm of said lover, a key lever to which the other end of said pull wire is connected, a type carrier adapted to reciprocate in a horizontal direction, and a floating member connected at one end to the rear end of said type carrier and operatively connected at a point remote therefrom with said lever, whereby said floating member is moved upwardly and rearwardly as said key lever is actuated.
