Speeifimtion of Letters Patent.
Patented @ct. 22, 11am.
V Toall whomz'tmaycdnccrm' I Be it known that T, Gnoncn Gonna Gems,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletowmin the countyof Middlesex and State of'Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'llypeewrlting Machines, of which the following 1s a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to typewriting machines, and more particularly to improved type actions therefor.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a simplified and reliable type action adapted to transmit movement from a finger key lever to a .type carrier to eiiect substantially silent printing.
A further object is to provide a practical and eficient train of connections between a key lever'and a pivoted type carrier and to associate therewith means independent of the key lever and paper platen to limit printing movement of the type carrier and to permit rapid operation of the machine.
Other objects and advantages will in part be noted hereinafter in connection .with the description of .the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a typical embodiment of the invention. 7 r
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction; combinations. of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth, and the scope of the aplication of which be indicated in the ollowing claims.
Referring more'particularly to the drawing, there is represented a typewriting machine e 1, having at its fore part a key board and at itsupper rear part a paper roll 2, mounted on a traveling carriage adapted for longimuilline movement and 1' vertical shifting to permit difierent printing. A flat metal platen 3 is .u I r l adjacent the platen roll plane of the am's of the latter, and 1 mechanism is employed to carry the pape rard below the roll and upward in on the paper against the platen 3 as a back- 2 in the hotal.
ifig. This structure of the paper roll and platen is a characteristic of the Noiseless typewriter, for which the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing is particularly applicable, although it is :to be I understood that features of the invention are as well susceptible of use with various other styles of machines. v
The finger-key levers 4 are disposed horizontally at the base of the machine and provided with character caps in the key-board, and are pivoted at their rear ends on one or more cross bars 5 or other suitable devices adjacent the rear of the machine. The key levers are guided vertically in a comb memher 6 adjacent the keyboard, and leaf springs 7 suitably mounted, are arranged to engage cam lugs 8 adjacent the pivotal axis of the key levers and normally urge the latter to elevated position against a cushioning stop 9 extendingeacross the machine adjacent the comb mem and each comprises a bar 10 pivoted at its lower end on an axis llassociated with a segment support 12. The. bar 10 carries at its upper end a type piece 13 having preferably two type characters 14 and 14c for difierent case printing. The forward lower edges of the type carriers are curved at 15 for engagement by a complementary curved cam edge 16 of the lower arm of a bell crank lever' 17 pivoted at 18 on an aids associated with a cross beam 19 of the machine. The
.fore horizontal arm of the bell crank lever with the platen roll 2, a curved cross brace .24, and a connection therefi'om to the free end of the type carrier is employed to limit movement of the latter when actuated to efiect printing. This connection, as shown, comprises two links25 and 26 pivoted together and attached at their ends to the type mrrier adjacent the type piece 13 and to a r 6. The type carriers are disposed radially about a central printing point block 27 mounted for longitudinal adjustment on the cross frame 24. The links 25 and 26 are designed to be straightened as an extended toggle, when the type carrier is moved to print, and the protracted or printing limit of the type carrier is therefore established independently of the platen and the key lever. Such limit, also, may be readily adjusted through the medium of adjusting screws 28 associated with the blocks 27.
v A cushioning pad 29 is mounted above the Q shown in the drawing, the key lever being urged upward by spring 7 and the type carrier being urged away from the platen by spring 21. Upon depression of the key lever to effect printing, moyement is transmitted through link 20 and pivoted bell crank lever 17 to the type carrier, the engaging edges of the bell crank lever and type carrier having a rolling or creeping point of contact in such a relation that upon depression of the key lever the speed of the type carrier is progressively increased. As the type carrier swings toward the platen, links 25 and 26 assume straightened position and positively limit the rearward throw of the type at a point sufficient to insure proper impression, but to prevent the type carrier impacting with the paper with a noisy hammer blow.
Overthrow of the toggle 25, 26 is prevented by engagement of the link 25 closely adjacent its fixed axis with the leaf spring 30, the latter also tending to insure an immediate breaking of the tog 1e and return of the type carrier to retracte position.
A suitable escapement mechanism for the traveling carriage is, of course, provided for actuation by a universal bar associated with the key levers, or some moving part in the type action, and by a space bar. The various other conventional features and devices are also, of course, incorporated in the machine.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departin from the scope thereof, it is intended that a l matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. 1
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s t 1. In a typewriting machine, in combination, a platen, a pivoted type carrier, a key lever, an operative connection between said type carrier and said lever to move the former to effect printing, and means independent of said connection to limit the printing stroke of said type carrier without impact and substantially independently of said jplaten.
