Abstract

534,813. Sextants ; clinometers. EVERITT, P. F. June 17, 1939, No. 17740. [Class 97 (ii)] In sextant and like instruments provided with a bubble level the periphery of the bubble is illuminated uniformly by means of a transparent ring having a matt surface illuminated by internal reflection of light from an external source. A transparent ring 14 of glass having all its surfaces reflecting except its upper surface 16 which is a matt surface is illuminated by a lamp 3 through an aperture 5 and, preferably, an extension 15 of the ring 14. The light is reflected from the surfaces of the ring and illuminates the upper matt surface 16 which throws light against the conical walls 12 of the bubble chamber 6 the walls 12 reflecting the light on to the periphery of the bubble 13. The ring 14 may be provided with V-shaped reflecting surfaces 17 and a series of apertures 5 of varying sizes may be provided in a disc 4. Specification 530,702 is referred to.
