Abstract
500,892. Photometric apparatus. YACCO, S. A. F. Oct. 11, 1937, Nos. 27615 and 27616. Convention dates, Oct. 16, 1936 and Aug. 11, 1937. [Class 97 (i)] In apparatus for measuring the opacity of a liquid, in which a mark is observed through a variable thickness of the liquid and the thickness which is just sufficient to obscure the mark is determined, the mark is disposed on the foremost surface, visible to the observer, of the rear wall of the liquid receptacle. The apparatus is particularly intended for measuring the opacity of lubricating oil. Fig. 2 shows a form in which the liquid is contained in a wedge-shaped space between a glass plate 3 and the base'of a groove 2 formed in a metal plate 1 against which the plate 3 is held by a spring-urged stirrup 5. The marks to be observed through the liquid are formed on the plate 1, and consist of a number of lines 8 with which graduations may be associated. The stirrup 5 can be rotated about a pivot 20 to enable the apparatus to be dismantled for cleaning &c. In Fig. 5, the liquid is contained in the space between the plane upper surface of the plate 1 and the convex lower surface of a lens 3 which is held against the plate by a screw cap 17 and packing ring 25. The marks 8 consist of concentric circles on the plate 1. Connection 18, 19 are provided to enable the instrument to be inserted in an oil-circulation system, such as that of a motor-vehicle engine, the instrument then being mounted on the instrument-board of the vehicle. Fig. 13 shows a form in which the liquid is contained in the space between the plane lower surface of a plano-convex lens 3<1> and the plane upper surface of the member 1. The lens is mounted in a support 30 which screws on to the base 55 so that the thickness of the liquid layer can be varied by rotating the support. The rotational position of the support 30 is indicated on a scale. A single mark 8, which may be an arrow, is provided on the member 1. The lens 3<1> serves to concentrate light from a source 36 on the liquid.
