Abstract

580,973. Sextants; sighting clinometers. EVERITT, P. F., HUGHES, A. J., and HUGHES & SON, Ltd., H. March 24, 1939, No. 9329. [Class 97 (ii)] An additional member which reflects light from the luminous body observed on to the artificial horizon or other datum is coupled to the main sighting device so that the datum is illuminated whatever the position of the observed body. The index mirror 1 is mounted on a rotatable disc 3 coupled by links 22, 20 to a disc 11 mounted in a hood 6 with a transparent cover 7. Two prisms 8, 9 having a common reflecting surface 10, are mounted on the disc 11 between pillars 14 and a strip 12 and reflect the light from the observed body through screens on to the artificial horizon 25. The coupling links are arranged to rotate the prisms 8, 9 at the same rate as the index mirror or at one half the rate of the sighting device if a direct sighting device is used.
