[Class 69 (ii)] A multi - stage hydraulic torque converter as claimed in the parent Specification is modified by the provision of an additional turbine: blade ring 6 rotating in the same direction as the pump rotor 2 with which co-operates a turbine rotor 4 rotating in the same direction and a turbine rotor 5 rotating in the opposite direction. Guide blades 7 are arranged between the turbine 6 and pump rotor 2. The converter is stated to develop a high tractive effort at low speeds. In a modification, in which the pump rotor rotates in a fixed housing, the positions of the turbine 6 and guide ring 7 are interchanged, and the turbine 5 is mounted on a hollow shaft movable axially to withdraw it from the liquid circuit.
