Abstract
504,914. Hydraulic power transmitters. AKTIEBOLAGET LJUNGSTROMS ANGTURBIN. July 30, 1937, No. 21212. Convention date, Aug. 1, 1936. [Class 69 (ii)] The invention relates to multi-stage hydraulic torque converters of the F÷ttinger type and of the kind comprising in a single working circuit an impeller followed in the direction of circulation of the working liquid by a number of turbine blade rings each of which either (a) is separated from the next following turbine blade ring by a guide blade ring, or (b) rotates oppositely to the next following turbine blade ring, no guide blade ring being interposed. Some of the turbine blade rings, taken in pairs, may rotate oppositely, and others be separated by a guide blade ring. According to the invention, one or more of the said turbine blade rings is adapted to be withdrawn from the circuit, so as to vary the number of turbine blade rings in the circuit. One form, Figs. 1, 1a, comprises an impeller 7, oppositely rotating turbines 10, 13, and a reaction member 14. The turbine 13 can be axially withdrawn from the circuit. The turbine 10 drives through gears 19, 21 an output shaft 20 which is also driven by the turbine 13 through freewheel 55 and gears 24, 25, 26. The turbines 10, 13 may alternatively drive separate or connected axles of a vehicle. The reaction member blades 14 are pivotally adjustable, thus affording means for interrupting the torque transmission, to facilitate, e.g. the operation of reversing gear. In a modification, Fig. 4, the pump blades 91 are pivotally adjustable ; the reaction member blades 90 are not adjustable but have a one-way mounting. In a modification, Fig. 5, both of the oppositely rotating turbines 103, 105 can be axially withdrawn from the circuit; when the turbine 103 is so withdrawn, a portion thereon 110 obstructs the outlet from the impeller 102 and so impedes the circulation. In a modification (not shown), the part 110 and the reaction member 107 are both omitted. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the turbines 117, 118, 119 all rotate in the same direction. The turbine 117, which is axially withdrawable, drives the shaft 122, and the interconnected. turbines 118, 119. drive the shaft 124. The pump blades 112 are pivotally adjustable; fixed guide blades 120, 121 are provided.
