Abstract
The cooling fan of an automobile has eight blades built up in diametrically opposite pairs attached to individual central flanges. One of these flanges is fixed to the shaft (12) with the other three pairs connected to the fixed flange (F1) by pins which engage curved slots. In addition a spiral spring (27) connects the flange (F4) to the shaft. The increasing torque, required by the fan as engine speed increases, deflects the spiral spring, causing the pairs of blades to align themselves one with the other, so that a maximum speed there is only one effective pair of blades, which reduces the power to drive the fan.
