Abstract

533,309. Artificial silk ; polyamine derivatives. COURTAULDS, Ltd., and SHARPLES, E. H. Aug. 10, 1939, No. 23077. [Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] Artificial threads are obtained by extruding viscose into a coagulating liquid which contains an addition of less than 0.2 per cent. of a secondary or tertiary aliphatic amine or a polyethylene polyainine containing more than 4 carbon atoms, or a condensation product of such a polyethylene polyamine with an aliphatic chlorine compound. Specified additions include tributylamine, triamylamine, triethylene tetramine, tetraethylene pentamine, and condensation products of polyethylene polyamines with dichlorethylene, triglycoldichloride, or dichloracetone. The added substance has the effect of substantially preventing precipitation of insoluble compounds on the spinning jets. The' coagulating liquid may be of the mineral acid-salt type, e.g, sulphuric acid and sodium, ammonium, or zinc sulphate, with or without glucose or other substances. The condensation products of polyethylene polyamines with halogen derivatives may be made by boiling an alcoholic solution of the components. An alcoholic solution of α α<SP>1</SP>-dichloro diethylethylene glycol ether (3 molecules) is cautiously added to an alcoholic solution of tetraethylene pentamine (4 molecules) and the mixture is boiled for an hour. The mixture is neutralized with alcoholic potash and filtered, and the condensation product is recovered by evaporation.
