Abstract

532,879. Machinery guards. BUTLER, Ltd., C., and ORCHARD, W. J. July 27, 1939, No. 21784. [Class 80 (iv)] Relates to guards for hand-guided cutting and severing apparatus of the kind having a rotary knife for cutting fabrics, paper &c. A rotary knife 10 driven by an electric motor 11 is supported in a frame 12 having a base 13 adapted to be moved over the work by a handle 15. The forward part of the base has a ramp 14 to raise the work from the bench. The knife is guarded by a sheet metal segment 17 the curved outer edge of which overlaps the periphery of the knife. The guard segment is pivoted on the axis 18, has a roller 19 at its lower front end and is adapted to be raised by a lever 20 disposed adjacent the handle 15. It is urged towards the work, e.g. by a weight which may be the lever 20. In a modification, a second segment parallel to the first may be disposed on the opposite face of the knife, the curved peripheries of the two segments being joined. The segment 17 may be extended to guard other parts of the knife edge. An aperture 22 in the segment permits of the application of a sharpening device 21.
