Abstract

532,591. Two-part couplings. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Sept. 8, 1939, No. 25456. Convention date, Sept. 8, 1938. [Class 38 (i)] Relates to means for mounting a tubular electric lamp particularly a quartz lamp, used for ultraviolet radiation, which has graded seals protruding from the end and protected by metal sleeves attached to the tubular envelope. According to the invention, a conducting strap 4 is clamped about each sleeve 2 and is provided with a rigid extension 4a which enters a spring contact on the holder. Preferably the ends of the lamp are enclosed in insulated housings. The central part 3 Fig. 1 of each sleeve 2 is of smaller diameter and is embraced by the metal strap 4 which is clamped by a bolt 11. When the strap is placed around the constriction 3, the sleeve is inserted in a porcelain body 6 which has a boss 8 formed with a longitudinal slot 9 and a transverse slot 12. The bolt 11 is then inserted in the strap ends, which lie in the slot 12, and is tightened. The ends of the bolt project into the slot 12 and prevent the displacement of the body 6. The space between the body 6 and the sleeve 2 may be filled with asbestos twine 7 or other suitable compressible material. The extension 4a plugs into a spring member 16, Fig. 2, housed in a porcelain body 14 having a skirt 15 which encloses part of the boss 8. The tip 10 of the extension is bent slightly to secure the lamp in the holder.
