Abstract

532,470. Caulking decks. ARMSTRONG CORK CO. July 31, 1939, No. 22199. Convention date, Dec. 31, 1938. [Class 113 (i)] Spaces between deck planks 7 are fitted with pre-formed strips 8 of caulking material which are in a partly compressed condition so that they may be further compressed or may expand as the planks expand or contract with varying weather conditions. The material may consist of granulated cork agglomerated with a thermosetting binder such as a phenolic condensation product, glue, urea-aldehyde or casein with a plasticizing agent such as glycerine, ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol. In assembling the deck, a plank, e.g. 7<1> is bolted to the cross beams 2, a strip 8<1> of the caulking material is placed between it and an adjacent loose plank 7<11> and the plank 7<11> is then pressed towards the strip to compress it by wedges 14 driven between the plank 7<11> and stops 13 engaging an abutment 11. Caulking strips are also arranged between the ends of a series of planks and the ends of an adjacent series of planks.
