Abstract
532,315. Consuming smoke. WIKARSKI, S. July 15, 1939, No. 20642. [Class 51 (i)] In a locomotive boiler furnace air for combustion is heated in tubes arranged in the smoke box or in hollow grate bars and is delivered by the aid of steam jets over the fire when the fire is freshly stoked and when the boiler blower is set in operation after closing of the throttle, the ratio of the quantity of steam admitted to the boiler blower to that admitted to the air blowers being determined by the quantity of fuel used. As shown in Fig. 1, air is heated in gilled tubes 1 situated in the smoke box and is forced through pipes 6, 7, 9 by steam blowers 8 to nozzles 9<SP>1</SP> delivering under the arch 10 of the firebox. In a modification smooth tubes replace the gilled tubes in the smoke box. Fig. 6, shows an alternative arrangement for heating the air consisting of hollow firebars 15 with internal ribs 15' the ends of which are directed downwardly the rear ends being. open to the ashpit and the front ends being connected to a manifold communicating with the blower 8 and pipe 9 shown in Fig. 1. For controlling the steam supply to the boiler and air blowers the valve arrangement shown in Fig. 7, is provided. Steam from the boiler enters a chamber 20 from which it may pass through valve 21 to pipe 18 leading to the air blowers 8. Steam may also pass from the chamber 20 through a valve 26 which is closed when the throttle is open by pressure of steam from the steam chest entering by inlet pipe 33 the chamber 25 and acting on the heel 27 of the valve. When the throttle is closed the pressure on the heel of the valve 26 is relieved and the valve opens by boiler pressure and admits steam from the chamber 20 to the chamber 23 from which it passes under the control of valves 31, 30 through the pipe 34 to the boiler blower and through a non-return valve 32 to the pipe 18 leading to the air blower. The valve 26 may also be adjusted or closed by hand.
