Abstract

531,867. Discharge lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and PIRANI, M. Aug. 4, 1939, No. 22677. [Class 39 (i)] In an electric discharge device having a long envelope with an activated electrode at each end heated-at least at starting-independently of the main discharge and with a rare gas filling to which mercury may be added, starting of the discharge is effected by (i) producing ions along substantially the whole of the discharge path and (ii) means independent of the means in (i) and of the main discharge producing a "hot spot" on the main electrodes during the part of each alternating cycle immediately before the main discharge starts. The means for producing the ions along the tube may be of the kind described in Specification 523,839; the "hot spots" are formed on each electrode by a pointed conductor separated by a small gap from that electrode and connected through an impedance with the other electrode. The main electrodes consist of tungsten helices filled with two or more separated pieces of porcelain-like material obtained by sintering together barium oxide and aluminium oxide. Dimensions of an embodiment are given. Arrangements described in Specifications 376,208, 379,991, 383,580, 403,428, 406,620, 440,945 and 462,363 are discussed. Specifications 505,670 and 506,919 also are referred to.
