Abstract
531,834. Helicopters. POPOVICI, S. July 25,1939, No. 21583. [Class 4] A power unit 2 adapted to operate a propeller 36 is suspended by a ball and socket 3, 4 in the upper part of a dome-shaped nacelle 1 of a helicopter and is adjusted by hand-operated gearing 8-12 to move the axis of the propeller relatively to the nacelle. The power unit is enclosed in a part-spherical carrier 7. The engine may be provided with a resilient gimbal mounting. Fuel and oil tanks 14, 15 and oil coolers 16 are arranged symmetrically around the upper part of the nacelle and compressed air tanks 27 supplied by a compressor 26 have nozzles 28 arranged beneath steadying fins 23. The floor has pivoted sections, the pilot's seat 13 being carried by a section 29a adapted to fall downwardly in case of emergency. Fans 34 for removing hot air and exhaust gases, and a shock-absorber 33 for deadening the shock on landing, are provided.
