Abstract
531,654. Fountain pens. LAFOREST, J. July 28, 1939, No. 21972. Convention date, July 28, 1938. [Class 146 (iii)] A fountain pen of the ball type in which ink is supplied to the tracing ball 6 by one or more balls 7. 8 which have an axial displacement limited by a stop is constructed with a stop formed of two or more wires 11, 12, which are preferably twisted together, the ends of the wires being spread by the feeding-ball 8 upon pressure being applied to the tracing-ball. The spreading of the wires is limited by the walls of a screw member 13 connected to a member A which screws into the pen reservoir. To the member B is secured a flared stamped metal tube C in which the balls 6, 7, 8 are arranged, this tube having an oval or similar cross-section at the position adjacent the ball 8 thus providing a passage for.the ink to flow past the ball 8. The wires 11, 12 are formed at the top end into a ring 10, Fig. 5, which bears on a shoulder in the member A. The space between the wires 11, 12 forms a capillary conduit conveying ink to the balls and acting also as a vent for the reservoir. Between the members A, B is a compensation chamber E formed of a number of compartments separated by baffles or washers 13 formed with apertures 14 connecting the compartments, or containing a helical spring of low pitch which confines ink, which overflows into the chamber E through an aperture 17 when the pressure is high to a helical path. The ink returns to the compartment B when the pressure is reduced and air can enter the aperture 17 via the chamber E and an air inlet aperture 15. The flow of ink can be regulated by relative motion of the members A, B, between which members is a washer 18 which acts as a brake to retain them in the adjusted position.
