Abstract

531,610. Fires or explosions, preventing or minimizing in internal combustion engine exhaust systems &c. HELMORE, W. March 31, 1939, Nos. 10087/39 and 5796/40. [Class 47 (ii)] (Also in Groups XXVII and XXII] In a flame or explosion trap, particularly for the induction or exhaust systems of internalcombustion engines, of the kind composed of alternate layers of plain and corrugated plates 3, 2 the plates are bonded together by an adherent layer of material electrodeposited on at least a part of the contacting surfaces of the plates. The plates may also be rendered specially absorbent to heat radiation either during or after the bonding operation. The trap may be composed of plain and corrugated plates of german silver, which are assembled in a frame or jig then immersed in an electroplating-bath of sodium stannate and caustic soda, the trap assembly being made the cathode and rolled nickel used as the anode, so that a layer of tin is deposited on the plates. The bonding may be consolidated by subsequent heating. The trap may then be blackened to increase heat absorption by immersion, as the anode, in a bath containing disodium hydrogen phosphate and phosphoric acid a copper cathode being used, so that a film of block tin oxide is formed.
