Abstract
531,507. Exhaust-silencers. ELIOT, S. July 25, 1939, No. 21544. Convention date, June 28. [Class 7 (ii)] A device for silencing and assisting the discharge of the exhaust of aircraft or motorvehicle engines comprises an expansion chamber 3 arranged in the exhaust pipe 2, which then leads the gases to an inlet 11 of a casing 10 of wing-like form, having a narrow outlet 13 at the rear edge, so that the air-stream produces a suction effect to assist in withdrawing the exhaust. The pipe 2 enters part-way into the chamber 3 and is there formed with louvred openings. The passage through the casing 10 is formed by curved lateral walls 18, 19, between which and the edges of the casing mineral wool or other sound-deadening material is arranged.
