Abstract
531,137. Wind and weather screens for motorcycles. BOWSER, E. July 13, 1939, No. 20377. [Class 136 (i)] A wind and weather screen for motor-cycles comprises an upper panel of celluloid or other sheet material of a flexible or semi-rigid nature and a lower apron of leather cloth &c. the two being secured along adjacent edges, and is characterized in that the sides of the windscreen are secured to clips or brackets one at each end of the handle-bar by means of forwardly extending arms which support the screen and distance it in front of the handle-bar sufficiently to accommodate the driver's hands and so as not to interfere with the operation of the controls on the handle-bar. The windscreen comprises an upper panel 1 of celluloid or other flexible or semi-rigid transparent material, and a lower apron 2 of leather cloth &c. the two parts being secured together by stitching &c. The panel 1 is mounted in a flexible strip-metal frame 3 provided at the sides with bearing members 4, in which are rotatably mounted supporting arms 5, which are bent at right-angles to form rearward extensions 5<SP>1</SP> carrying clips or brackets 6 for attachment to the cycle handle-bar at such a distance apart that the screen is held in a forwardly-bowed form in front of the handlebar so as to afford space for manipulation of the controls. The lower central part of the apron 2 is cut away at 8 so as to straddle the front fork, and the outer edges are formed with passages which carry stiffening wires or rods 10, the lower ends of which are fitted with clips 11 for connection to the rear ends of the front mudguard stays. Upper and lower straps 13 with press-stud fasteners 14 are passed respectively behind the front fork and around the rear of the mudguard. The upper part of the apron 2 may be provided with forwardly-extending gussets for the hands of the rider. For military use, sheet steel or armour plating may be used for parts of the screen.
