Abstract
529,934. Thermionic valves. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 12, 1939, No. 17168. Convention date, June 11, 1938. [Class 39 (i)'] In a thermionic valve containing a gas or metal vapour and having a cathode surrounded by a metal shield for retaining heat, such as that described in Specification 309,447, [Class 39 (i)], the shield is connected to the cathode through a considerable resistance, e.g. a resistance between a thousand and a million ohms. Figs. 1 and 2 show a cathode consisting of a number of radial vanes 1...6, preferably of gauze mounted on a central tube 7 containing a heater 8. The ends of the vanes are supported by rods 17...22 mounted on a base 13 which also supports through insulators 25, a metal shield 24, which may consist of a number of layers of nickel foil spaced from each other by protuberances and formed with a cover 14 and openings 26 for the passage of electrons. The shield is connected to the base 13 through a resistance 28. A modification with a directly heated cathode is also described.
