Abstract

542,495. Thermionic valves. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 9, 1940, No. 11440. Convention date, July 11, 1939. Addition to 536,070. [Class 39 (i)] The equipotential cathodes of heavy duty rectifiers &c. comprise a ribbon wound in zig-zag formation about pins 8, 9 projecting radially from metal rings 2, 3 held in axially spaced relation by rods 4...7. The ribbon may be plane or crimped and may be formed of or covered by gauze to assist retention of the activating material. The ribbon structure may be twisted or otherwise modified in shape. A heating filament is mounted in the space enclosed by the cathode structure, which is enclosed in a heat shield consisting of two concentric metal cylinders, between which are located a plurality of layers of loosely spaced metal foil as described in the parent Specification, and having a closed cover at the bottom and an apertured plate at the top. The shield may be insulated from or electrically connected through a high resistance e.g. 1,000 ohms to the cathode. The application described is to a rectifier having a filling of mercury with a pressure of 6-24 microns at the operating temperature of 40-60‹ C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the alternative construction in which the ribbon is made up of a number of filaments arranged side by side in a plane. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
