Abstract
529,363. Stuffing-box substitutes. SMITH, A., and SMITH, E. A. May 30, 1939, No. 15951. [Class 122(v)] A sealing gland comprises an annular member 6 closely fitting the shaft 1, an annular member 7 loose upon the shaft 1, an annular diaphragm 14 between the members 6, 7, and an anti-friction contact surface 17 on the member 7 bearing upon the end face of a bearing 2. Lubricant under pressure bears upon one side of the diaphragm 14 and the fluid medium it is desired to exclude from the bearing 2 is exerted on the other side thereof, the difference of pressure tending to extend the diaphragm 14 and press the surface 17 against the end of the bearing. The diaphragm may be of laminated oil-resisting rubber, and the internal surface of the :annular member 7 may be curved so as to self-align itself with the shaft.
