Abstract
520,377. Stuffing-box substitutes. WORKS DEVELOPMENT CO., Ltd., and EHRLICH, J. Sept. 20, 1938, No. 27466. [Class 122 (v)] A fluid-pressure sealing device for preventing the passage of liquids or gases in either direction between two members, comprises one or more flexible plates secured to one of the members and having a springiness which is inherent and/or imparted by an associated spring or the like, whereby the plates are pressed against a ground or other suitable surface formed on or secured to the other member. The flexible plates may or may not be flat and perpendicular to the axis of the members ; they are preferably made of steel, bronze,.aluminium alloy, or other metal, or they may be non-metallic ; and felt rings may be disposed between the free ends of the plates. Fig 2 shows two flexible plates 1, 9 separated by a distance-piece 10, fixed to the crankcase 3 of an internal combustion engine, and making contact with a part 8 of a roller bearing, and a shouldered nut 12, both on a shaft 4. Fig. 8 shows a resilient U-shaped annulus 17 held in position in a pump casing 16 by means of a rubber ring 18, the wings 19, 20 of the annulus pressing against fibre rings 21, 22 fixed to the impeller shaft 23. A further joint'is provided by a disc 26, and a U-ring 28 prevents lubricant passing from the ball bearing into the pump. Specification 517,488 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 349,076 and 459,071.
