Abstract
528,339. Ironing presses. RICHARDSON, J. R. S., and WHITAKER, Ltd., R. G. May 4, 1939, No. 13352. [Class 138 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXII] A piston and cylinder air cushion, more particularly applicable to garment presses, is provided with a byepass 6 in the cylinder wall 1 adjacent the end of the working stroke. The byepass communicates with the interior of the cylinder at a port 9 near the end of the cylinder and at a port 10 distant from the end somewhat more than the effective piston depth. Compression takes place during the outward stroke of the piston rod 4 till the piston 3 uncovers port 10, when back pressure on the piston is suddenly released. A vacuum is formed on return of the piston, but this is broken by ports 13 towards the end of the inner stroke. A needle valve 12 is provided to prevent compression occurring at the end of the return stroke.
