Abstract
528,091. Mercury; transporting. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and PHILLIPS, J. H. April 27, 1939, No. 12627. [Class 102 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXV] A device for causing a flow of conducting liquid, especially for causing a stream of liquid to issue from an orifice within a mercury converter as described in Specification 515,175, [Group XL], consists of a channel making a number of turns transverse to a magnetic field and to electric current passed across the channel from terminals in a direction perpendicular to the magnetic field. Fig. 4 shows an arrangement comprising two magnet polepieces 1, 2 between which is an insulated disc 3 of magnetic material forming, with the polepiece 1, 2 and two outer rings 8, 9 of conductive material, two chambers communicating through a control opening 4 and containing spirals 6, 7 of nickel-chromium alloy of substantially the same conductivity as mercury and forming spiral channels in the chambers. Current is passed through mercury in the chambers from the rings 8, 9 the mercury entering through an opening 10 in the ring 8 and issuing through an opening 11 in the ring 9. Helical or other channels may be employed.
