Abstract

885,774. Electromagnetic interaction pumps. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 23, 1958 [May 24, 1957], No. 16534/57. Class 35. The pressure developed in a linear induction interaction pump is increased by passing the duct several times in series through the working field. In one form, Fig. 1, the liquid duct 12 is carried several times between travelling-field cores 10, 11 and returned repeatedly to the start end 20 by loops 19 so as to form a spiral. The active duct-portions lie side by side in the air gap and are in electrical contact to allow lateral current flow through the ducts in succession, conductors 22 being secured to the outside edges of the outer ducts to facilitate current circulation. In a modification, the return loops are in the same plane as the ducts in the working gap, thus forming a single flat-spiral circuit. Alternatively a single central duct may be split as it leaves the core to produce flat spirals on either side of itself. The return loops may pass through an additional field member, and it is described how the ducts may be of rectangular spiral configuration with a field member on each side, or an even larger number of field members may be disposed on an appropriate polygon. Alternatively the duct may pass in zig-zag fashion through a stack of field members. Fig. 8 shows the application of the invention to a pump of radial type having an axially travelling flux produced by a suitable winding in the outer core 81. The annular duct is divided into four sectors 84, 85, 86, 87 connected in series by means of central ducts 88, 89, 90, 91.
