Abstract

527,743. Winch handles. HOOK, O., and DEWRANCE & CO., Ltd. April 19, 1939, No. 11850. [Class 78 (v)] The handle 21 of a winch is adapted to be stored in the hollow shaft 2 about which the drum 1 rotates. The drum may ride on ball, roller, or needle bearings 9, 10 and is held against the cable pull by a stationary ratchet wheel 14 engaged by spring pressed pawls 16. The handle 21 is pivoted at 22 to a piston 18 sliding in the shaft 2, and when withdrawn can be turned down to engage between any two of a ring of castellations 30 in a crown 26 running on ball-bearings 25 on the stationary shaft 2 and connected to the drum 1 through pawls 28. A knob 23 prevents the handle from falling through the shaft 2, and rings 24, 31 prevent detachment of the handle and of the crown 26 respectivly.
