[Classes 38 (ii) and 38 (iv)] Discontinuous regulation of the output voltage of a rectifier R to give, for example, a compound characteristic up to full load with a pronounced droop thereafter, is obtained by connecting across the primary of the imput transformer T a saturable choke La which is provided with opposed saturating windings Ls, Ls' connected respectively in series and in shunt with the output. A series-connected impedance L is provided on the input side of the choke, and a manually or automatically varied resistance Rh is provided in series with the shunt winding Ls whereby the output characteristic may be varied.
