Abstract

526,954. Cathode-ray tubes. MANIFOLD, M. BOWMAN-, and MILLER, H. March 22, 1939, No. 9067. [Class 39 (i)] In a television or like transmitting device in which an electron image is focused on to a mosaic screen which is scanned by a cathode beam the deflection of the scanning beam is so controlled by a steady field as to compensate for distortion produced by the focusing means. Fig. 1 shows such a device in which an image produced on a photo-electric screen 5 is focused by a coil 7 on to a mosaic screen 2 which is scanned by a ray from the cathode 3. A coil 10 surrounding the arm 4 of the tube containing the cathode 10 controls the beam to produce the desired compensation. To compensate distortion produced by the inclination of the scanning beam to the screen the coil 10 may be made unsymmetrical. The invention is also described in connection with apparatus, such as that described in Specification 442,666, in which the projected image and the cathode ray are on opposite sides of the mosaic. In such a device the scanning beam may be produced by a photoelectric or secondarily emission screen, which is scanned by a light beam or cathode ray, so that the scanning beam is always parallel to the axis of the device.
