Abstract
526,130. Abrasive articles. TENNANT, W. J. (Carborundum Co.). March 8, 1939, No. 7571. [Class 60] In the manufacture of abrasive articles employing silicon carbide granules bonded together or mounted on a backing, the granules are treated to form thereon a uniformly distributed and integrally united surface film of silica, whereby stronger adherence between the granules and the bond is achieved. The granules are formed by crushing a mass of silicon carbide and are mixed in a concrete mixer or a mill with 0.3 per cent. to 0.8 per cent. by weight of an oxidation accelerator, for example, a metallic oxide such as iron oxide, lead oxide or nickel oxide. The mixture is then roasted under oxidizing conditions in a rotary kiln until the granules have a silica content of from 0.5 per cent. to 5 per cent. of the weight of the granules, the preferred figure being 1.75 per cent.
