Abstract

525,512. Coating-compositions. B. B. CHEMICAL CO., Ltd., PUDDEFOOT, L. E., and WRIGHT, P. F. Feb. 23, 1939, No. 5985. [Class 95] A coating composition, for use in finishing the surfaces of such materials as leather, wood and pulp board, comprises shellac or a modified shellac or a shellac fraction, urea or thio-urea, casein or a like film-forming protein, and hexamethylene tetramine. Optional additions are formaldehyde, borax, sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, ammonium hydroxide, alcohol, pigments, water-soluble dyes, emulsifying agents such as triethanolamine, beeswax, carnauba wax, and plasticizers such as pine oil, tricresyl phosphate, dibutyl phthalate and sextol phthalate. A shellac solution may be treated with urea, and a casein solution with hexamethylene tetramine, and the two solutions mixed before any substantial gelling has taken place. Examples are given.
