Abstract

A process for producing on leather a finish of good fastness to wet and dry rubbing consists in applying to the leather a composition comprising a solution in a lower aliphatic alcohol of ethyl cellulose and, as plasticizer, a long chain aliphatic alcohol or acid having 8 or more carbon atoms, or an oil such as castor oil or neatsfoot oil, or a wax such as carnauba wax, or an ester such as tricresyl phosphate or dibutyl phthalate, and, if desired as an adhesive a natural or synthetic gum or resin soluble in the lower aliphatic alcohols, with or without colouring matter or pigment. A small proportion of an alcohol, ester or ether of boiling point between about 90 DEG C. and 160 DEG C. may be added to reduce the rate of evaporation. The finish may be applied by brushing, padding or spraying. In an example 10 parts of carbon black are dispersed in a mixture of 55 parts of 10 per cent methylated spirit solution of bleached shellac and 35 parts of a 10 per cent methylated spirit solution of ethyl clelulose. The dispersion is stirred into a solution of 10 parts of ethyl cellulose and 10 parts of cetyl alcohol in 500 parts of methylated spirit. To 10 parts of this finish, 1 part of ethylene glycol monoethyl ether may be applied. A clear finish, which may be applied to leather previously given a water pigment finish, may be produced by dissolving 10 parts of ethyl cellulose in 100 parts of methylated spirit, and adding a solution of 20 parts of cetyl alcohol in 350 parts of methylated spirit. In another example 30 parts of titanium white are dispersed by milling into a mixture of 12 parts of bleached shellac in 100 parts of methylated spirit and 5 parts of ethyl cellulose in 25 parts of methylated spirit. The dispersion is mixed with a solution of 5 parts of cetyl alcohol in 25 parts of methylated spirit with 10 parts of Rotor red B in methylated spirit, and with 10 parts of ethyl cellulose in 100 parts of methylated spirit. Brushed on to sumachtanned grained sheepskin splits and polished with a soft brush, the finish yields a moderately flexible bright bordeaux finish.
