[Class 28 (ii)] In a machine for tendering meat, the needlelike tools 27 which are reciprocated to penetrate the meat, are moved also laterally to impart a feed motion to the meat, the compound movement being obtained by a crank 22 and pivoted links 38 which connect the cross-head 24, carrying the tools 27, to stationary pivots 37. The tools 27 are arranged in pairs, each pair being staggered relatively to the next pairs, and work in slots 34 in angle-plates 32 removably secured to the housing 14 by bolts 33. The meat moves over the upper faces of the plates 32, which act as strippers for the tools 27, and a cap-plate 35 of wood, or other relatively soft material, is positioned over the plates 32 to take the thrust of the tools 27. The tools may have fish-tail ends 28, as shown, or may be formed as round punches, or with concave or serrated ends. The plate 35 may have perforations or channels to receive the ends of the tools which may wholly or partly penetrate the meat. The meat is fed to the tools along a shoot 44, which may incorporate an endless feeding-apron, and is discharged over a shoot or apron 45. Guards, for preventing injury to fingers, may be provided in the meat channels, and a shield 48 may be used when the machine is idle, to prevent flies from getting into the meat channel. By placing two or more pieces of the same or different meat, one on top of the other, and passing them through the machine, the pieces are knitted together to form one piece. In a modification, the meat is operated upon both from above and below by two gangs of tools working in unison.
