Abstract
524,393. Cycle supports. JORGENSEN, H. E. M. Jan. 28, 1939, No. 3047. [Class 136 (i)] A cycle support comprises one or more pivoted supporting-members adapted to be lowered and raised to the operative and inoperative positions by slow rearward and forward rotation respectively of the cycle wheel (preferably the front wheel), after the rider has dismounted, the operating-mechanism being automatically disengaged by centrifugal force during rapid rotation of the wheel when the cycle is being ridden. A plate or carrier 5, Figs. 1 and 2, is clamped to the wheel hub 1 and is provided with an angularly-bent end plate 6 and with a rod 7 forming a pivot for a gravity-controlled arm 8, which comprises a main plate 9 and side members 10 having bent ends 11 pivotally engaging the rod 7. The arm 8 is provided with a rubber stop 12, which abuts against the end plate 6 and the plate 5 respectively in the two extreme positions of the arm. In the forward position, the arm 8 engages an arm 14 pivoted on a stud 15 on a bracket 16, 18 secured to the wheel axle. The lower part of the bracket has an outwardly-bent arm 18a provided with an inclined pivot 19 for a support 20 adapted to be swung downwards to engage the ground in an outwardly slanting position, the movement of the support in either direction being limited by abutments 23, 24 formed by a gap in a flange 17 on the edge of the bracket. The arm 14 is connected by a strap 22 to the support 20, so that when the cycle wheel is reversed, the arm 8 depresses the arm 14, which in turn lowers the support 20. The support 20 is held in its two extreme positions by a tension spring connected by a wire 25 to a fixed pin 26. When the cycle wheel is rotated forwardly again, the arm 14 and support 20 are first pushed towards the inoperative position by the rod 7, the movement being completed by the spring. During riding the arm 8 is swung to the disengaged position 8a by centrifugal action. When the support is in use, the front wheel fork may be prevented from turning by means of a spring-controlled forked plate pivoted to the mudguard and adapted to be turned to engage a frame member. Modifications of detail are described.
