Abstract

524,290. Protecting magnesium and alloys. MAGNESIUM ELEKTRON, Ltd. Jan. 25, 1939. No. 2659. Convention date, Feb. 2, 1938. [Class 93] [Also in Groups II and XXXVI] In the production of dark protective layers on magnesium and magnesium-base alloys by dipping in aqueous solutions of alkali metal salts (including ammonium salts) of those metallic oxy-acids which contain in the acid radicle metals of the group comprising vanadium, molybdenum, tungsten, niobium, tantalum and uranium, such solutions have a pH value lying between about 4 and about 7 and contain no intentional additions of dihydrogen phosphate. The temperature of the solution may be between 20‹C. and boiling point, preferably between 40 and 60‹C. and the layers may be compacted, as by impregnation with linseed oil, and subjected to after-treatment with organic solutions capable of precipitating metals such as tannic acid, 8- oxyquinoline, anthranilic acid or cupferron. Deposition may be promoted by applying a voltage, the work piece forming the cathode and graphite &c. the anode, or the work piece may be short-circuited externally of the bath with a coacting electrode of nobler material disposed in the bath.
