Abstract

523,837. Ornamenting; dyes. SOC. OF CHEMICAL INDUSTRY IN BASLE. Jan. 16, 1939, No. 1419. Convention date, Jan. 15, 1938. [Class 93] [Also in Group IV] Aluminium or alloys thereof provided with an oxide coating by electrolysis or by purely chemical action are coloured by means of a water-soluble ester-like or amide-like dyestuff derivative obtained by the process described in Specifications 480,358 or 505,504, [both in Group IV]. The article may be immersed in a solution of the dyestuff, a solution may be applied by painting or spraying, or a paste may be applied, by printing. The colour may be produced in two stages comprising dyeing followed. by regeneration of the dyestuff by saponification or hydrolysis; also, dyeing may take place simultaneously with the production of the oxide coating The following examples are described:-(1) A bluish-grey aluminium sheet is produced by suspending an oxide-coated sheet in an aqueous solution of the product of the action of metasulphobenzoyl chloride on the azo-dye 2-methyl- 4-nitraniline 2:3-hydroxynaphthoic acid otoluidide and subsequently in a mixture of common salt solution, water and ammonia solution. (2) A yellow sheet is produced by using an aqueous solution of the product of the reaction of either meta-sulphobenzoylchloride or 4-chloromethyl-1-benzoyl chloride with pyridine on the tertiary condensation product from cyanuric chloride, 2-aminoanthraquinone and aniline. (3) A brown colour is produced by using an aqueous solution of the product of the action of 3 :5-disulphobenzoylchloride on the diazo dye 2- methoxy-aniline 2:5-dimethyl-1-aminobenzene 3-methyl-4-chlorophenol. (4) A Bordeaux colour is produced by using an aqueous solution of the product of the action of disulphobenzoylchloride on 1:5-dioxy-4:8-di-para-methoxybenzoylaminoanthraquinone. (5) The dye of example (2) is added to an oxalic acid bath used for producing an anodic oxide film on aluminium, and the film is then treated with a solution of ammonia.
