Abstract
523,812. Beryllium chloride. TENCH, F. (Richardson, H. A.). Jan. 14, 1939, No. 1363. [Class 1 (iii)] Anhydrous beryllium chloride is obtained by heating beryllium sulphate, in hydrous or anhydrous form, in the presence of a chlorinating agent and a reducing agent, e.g., chlorine and carbon or chlorine and carbon monoxide, or a substance giving rise to a chlorinating agent under the reaction conditions, e.g., carbon tetrachloride or phosgene. According to an example a mixture of beryllium sulphate and carbon is heated in a current of chlorine, the reaction being conveniently effected in a vertical internally heated chamber, into the top of which the charge and chlorine are fed. The heating may be by an internal electric resistance, e.g., the charge itself. The temperature of reaction is between 520‹ and 800‹C. Specification 275,945, [Class 1 (iii)], is referred to.
