Abstract
523,745. Road signs. CARVER, H. N. Jan. 13, 1939, Nos. 1224, 1225 and 1226. Convention dates, Jan. 15, 1938, March 8. 1938, and April 21, 1938. [Class 3 (ii)] A road traffic sign for indicating obstructions and comprising a reflector for returning rays of light from oncoming vehicles is provided with a housing member which encloses the reflector completely when not in use and serves as a supporting base when in operative position on the road. The reflector is preferably constructed with spaced plates 14, 15, Fig. 6, of rolled coloured glass formed with prismatic inner faces with a lustrous coating 17 and mounted in a gasket 35 within ring frames 18, 19 secured together by screws 26 ; in a modification, plain glass plates carrying reflecting buttons arranged to form a legend may be employed. The ring frames are hinged by a pin 30 to a pair of flanged discs 3, 4, Fig. 2, which in the position shown form a base for supporting the reflector 14 in operative position but when turned up enclose the reflector completely thus protecting it when out of use. The hinged lugs are constructed to bring the reflector to a right angle position as the discs are opened out and to secure the discs in this position, and locking means on the discs serve to secure these when enclosing the reflector.
