(ci. 189-28) This invention relates to a device for securing a pole to a supporting surface, and is more particularly directed to such device, hereinafter more particularly described, which will enable a pole to be secured to a highway or other supporting surface by rotation from a horizontal to an upright position, on an anchor plate to be secured to the supporting surface, and then latching the pole to the anchor member in upright position. Pursuant to the invention, a pole so secured to a highway may be readily lowered for removal or adjustment of the lighting units, signals or other objects supported thereby. The invention provides a novel means for registration of the pole base with the anchor plate and for tightly locking said pole base to the anchor plate.
These and other advantageous objects, which will appear from the drawings and from the description hereinafter, are accomplished by the structure of my invention, of which an embodiment is illustrated in the drawings. It will be apparent, from a consideration of said drawings and the following description, that the invention may be embodied in other forms suggested thereby, and such other forms as come within the scope of the appended claims are to be considered within the scope and purview of the instant invention.

As shown in the drawings, pursuant to the invention a base is provided to which the pole or other object to be supported on the highway or other supporting surface is secured, the pole base 10 having the two lower end walls 111, 12 (Fig. 5) one of said end walls of the pole base (as 1.1) having a pin or pins .-113 offset inwardly thereof, said pin being arcuately curved (as at 14, Fig. l) to conform to the arcuate face 115 of a bearing 16 on the anchor plate 17 (Fig. 3). The bearing -16 is disposed at one end T18 of the anchor plate 17, and the latter is provided with a second end 19 spaced from said end 18 a distance substantially equal to the spacing of the lower end walls -1`1 and 1'2 of the base 110 above described. The arcuate face of the bearing 16 opens outwardly of said anchor plate end y18 (Figs. l and 5) and provides a bearing for sliding reception of the pin '13 on the lower end wall 111 of the pole base (as above mentioned) to thus tiltably journal the base on the anchor plate. The latter is secured to the surface S (Fig. 3) for supporting the lighting or other device fixed to the base 10 by suitable means, such as by providing the anchor plate 17 with a `ice plurality of keyways or recesses 20-23 through which the threaded ends of bolts 24-27 anchored in the surface S may pass, so that by securing nut and washer members to said bolts, as indicated in Figs. 2 and 5, the anchor plate f17 may be secured to the surface S. Pursuant to the present invention, complementary registering means are provided at the second lower end 512, of the base 10 and on the second or other end `19 (Fig. 2) of the anchor member '17 for registration when the base is disposed on the anchor member. The complementary registering means at the second lower end of the wall of the base 12 and on the second other end of the plate 19 may comprise, as shown in Fig. S, upstanding members such as 29, 30 on the anchor plate 17 and 31, 32 on the base 10, including a complementary shaping of the lower edge of the second lower end wall 12 providing downwardly opening notches, to prevent lateral shifting of the base 10 on the anchor member .17, by snugly telescoping over the upper portions of the members 29 and 30, for registration of the pole base with anchor plate and to secure said parts together in the position shown in Fig. l. The members 29 and 30 on the anchor plate 17 may be provided with threaded means such as studs 33, 34 and the members 31, 32 on the base member 10 formed as spaced fingers with lower normally horizontal surfaces from which inclined surfaces extend to the pole base, providing brackets having openings 31a and 32a for reception of said threaded studs and against which nut members, such as shown at 35 in Fig. l, may be threaded. When tightened, said nut members will bear `against the upper surfaces of members 31, 32 on the base 10, to thus secure the parts together. Complementary arcuate registration means may be provided on the end 18 (Fig. 2) of the anchor plate and on the said one lower end 11 of the base member for cooperation with the bearing means (13, 16) for pivotally connecting the base and anchor plate. Said complementary arcuate registration means may comprise, as shown in Fig. 5, arcuate bosses `40, 41 onthe end l18 on the anchor plate 17 for cooperation with complementarily recessed `socket portions `42, l43 on the lower end 111 of the base 10, or as shown in Fig. 6, said complementarily arcuate registration means may comprise an arcuate face 44 on the bearing 16 opening inwardly of the anchor plate opposite the arcuate outwardly opening face of said bearing, bosses 40a and 41a upstanding from the anchor plate 17a, and posts 45, 46 on the lower end wall 11 of the base 10 provided with recessed nosings `47-48 complementary to said arcuate face on the bearing and opening inwardly of the anchor plate, said nosings 47-48 being disposed between the lugs 40a and 41a when the base is upright and acting like the bosses 40, 41, to prevent lateral shifting of said base. The complementary registering members 29, 30, 31, 32 on the base 10 and on anchor plate y17 respectively may be provided with complementary surfaces `49, 50, lying in an inclined plane which is generally parallel to the axis of the bearing `16, and slopes upwardly and away from said bearing, -the stud means 33, 34, extending generally normal or perpendicular to said surfaces 49, y50 (Fig. 2) and l51 and 52 (Fig. 5). By tightening the nut members 35, said members may be moved together into abutting relation thus securely locking the parts together until such time as it may be desired to either lower the base member |10 and pole supported thereby or to remove the base 10 from the plate '1`7, at which time the nut members 35 may be loosened and the base /10 rotated and removed as described in the direction of arrow 28 in Fig. 5. The members 31, 32 (Fig. 5) instead of being formed as two separate elements, may be formed as a continuous plate 36, Fig. 6, provided with openings 31b, B2b, to receive the threaded studs 33a, 34a on the complementary registering members 29a, 30a. In the form shown in Fig. 6,
said anchor plate 17a may be provided with the apertures 20a-23a corresponding functionally with the recesses 20-23 of anchor plate 17 of Fig. 2. The pin 13a, inthe form shown in Fig. 6, correspondsl with the pin 13 in Fig. 1,A except that pin 13a is formed coextensive with the length of the lower end wall 11a of the base a in the form of'invention shown in Fig. 6.

In combination, a pole base and an anchor plate for securing the pole base to a highway or other supporting surface, two spaced lower end walls on-said base, twovopposed spaced -ends on said anchor plate, disposed at substantially the spacing of said lower end walls of the base, a bearing on said anchor Vplate at one of said two ends, having an arcuate face opening outwardly of said anchor plate end, a pin at one of said two lower end walls of said base offset inwardly thereof and arcuately curved to conform to said arcuate face of the bearing and slidably engaging said bearing, thus tiltably journalling the base on the anchor plate, complementary registeringl means on the base and anchor plate preventing lateral shifting between them, and means on said second lower end wall of the base and on said other end of the anchor plate to secure them together comprising complementary surfaces on said second lower end wall of the base and on said plate, inclined in a plane parallel to the axis of, and upwardly and away from, said bearing, and means moving said members to bring said base and plate surfaces into abutting relation comprising stud means fixed to said anchor plate and extending generally normal to said inclined surfaces, fingers projecting downward from said pole base, carrying the complementary inclined surfaces thereof, juxtaposed on the anchor plate inclined surfaces, and between which the stud means may be received, and nut means threadable on said stud means.
2. In combination, a pole base and an anchor plate to secure the pole base to a highway or other supporting surface, two spaced lower end walls on said base, two opposed spaced ends on said` anchor plate disposed at substantially the spacing of said lower end walls of the base, a bearing on said anchor plate at one of said two ends, having an arcuate face opening outwardly of said anchor plate end, a pin at one of said two lower end walls of said base offset inwardly thereof and arcuately curved to conform to said arcuate face of the bearing and slidably engaging said bearing, thus tiltably journalling the base on the anchor plate, complementary means on the base and plate preventing lateral shifting between lthem said complementary means including arcuate bosses upstanding from the bearing end portion of said 'anchor plate,rsocket portions on the lower end of the pole base receiving said anchor plate bosses and means on the second lower end wall and on the other end of the anchor plate to secure them together when the baselis disposed on the anchor plate comprising complementary surfaces on said second wall of the pole base and on said anchor plate, inclined in aplane parallel to the axis of, and upwardly and away from, said bearing, and means moving said members to bring said base and .plate surfaces into abutting relation comprising stud means fixed to said anchor plate and extending generally normal to said inclined surfaces, spaced means projecting from said pole base, carrying the complementary inclined surfaces thereof, juxtaposed on the yanchor plate inclined surfaces andbetween which the stud means are received, and nut means lthreadable on said stud means.

In combination, a pole base and an anchor plate for securing said pole base to a highway or other supporting surface, two spaced lower end walls on said base, two opposed spaced ends on said anchor plate disposed at substantially the spacing of said lower end walls of the base, a bearing on said anchor plate at one of said two ends, having an arcuate face opening outwardly of said anchor plate end, the upper end of said bearing terminating inwardly of the perimeter of the anchor plate, a pin at one of said lower two end walls of the said base oiiset inwardly of the anchor plate and arcuately curved to conform to said arcuate face of the bearing for sliding engagement therewith, tiltably journalling the base on the anchor plate, and complementary means on the basis and anchor member preventing relative lateral shifting therebetween, said complementary means comprising arcuate bosses upstanding from the bearing end portion of the anchor plate and socket portions on the lower end of the base receiving said anchor plate bosses, the other end portion of said plate having upstanding members and said base being provided with downwardly opening notches, receiving the upstanding members.

In combination, a pole base and an anchor plate for securing said pole base to a highway or other supporting surface, two oppose spaced lower end walls on said base, two opposed spaced ends on said anchor plate, disposed at substantially the spacing of said lower end walls of the base, a bearing on said anchor plate at one of said two ends, having an arcuate face opening outwardly of said anchor plate end, a pin at one of said two lower end walls of said base offset inwardly of the perimeter thereof and arcuately curved to conform to said arcuate face of the bearing slidably engaging therewith, tiltably journalling the base on the anchor plate, complementary registering means on the base and anchor plate preventing lateral shifting therebetween, said registering means including arcuate bosses upstanding from the bearing end portion of the anchor plate and socket portions of the lower end of the pole base, receiving said anchor plate bosses.
