Description

May 31 1932. J, M LLER 1,860,719
HIGHWAY MARKER Filed June 11. 1951 l Patented May 3l, '19312 UNITED STATES j JAMES u. MILLER, or' Kiowa, :Kansas HIGHWAY Mamma Application fled June 11, 1931. Serial No.i 543,889.
This invention relates to highway markers, and more particularly to a marker which is adapted to be visible during both the day and the night.
` An object of this invention is to provide a reecting marker which is adapted to reflect the light of an approaching vehicle so as to.
illuminate the marker for determining the position of culverts, curves, bridges, or the like.
`Another objectof. this invention is to provide a marker of this kind with means whereby the indicia carried by the marker may be visible during both the day and the night, i5 the face of the marker being illuminated by the light of the approaching vehicle.
. A further object of this invention is to provide a marker of this kind which may be readily and cheaply manufactured and which may. be mounted on any desired supporting post. 4The above and various other objects and advantages Iof this invention will in part be described in and in part be understood from the following detailed description of the present preferred embodiment, the same be- T ing illustrated' in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1V is a detail front elevationv of a device constructed according to the preferred embodiment of this invention;
Figure 2 is a detail rear elevation partly broken away, and I Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional view `taken on the^line 3--3 of Figure 2. Referring to thel drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding p parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 designates generallya supporting post inthe form of a pipe' or the like, which is disposed in vertical position on which a highway marking member 11 is mounted. This highway marking member comprises a `pair of frame-sections 12 which are hinged together-atf'iie endas at 13, and' at the oppo- 15 site end are provided with contacting stems 19 is disposed about the plate members 16 14 which are disposed within the interior of the pipe section 10 and provided with an aperture therethrough for receiving a securing pin l5 which is disposed through the pipe section 10.
In the present disclosure, the frame sec' tions 12, when mounted in the pipe or sup-` port 10, form a shield, but I do not wish to be limited to this particular configuration, as the frame sections 12 may be constructed so,l as to form any other desired configuration. The frame sections 12 are constructed of substantially U-shaped or channel construction and within the channel of the frame sections Y 12, there are disposed a pair of plates 16-and 17. These pla- tes 16 and 17 are provided at the outer surface thereof with prisms so as to provide an illuminated member when light is.
uprojected thereagainst. A piece of tinfoil 18 or other reflecting element is positioned between the'two plate members 16 and 17, this refiecting element 18 having the opposite faces thereof polished so as to reiect light through the prisms on the outer surfaces4 of the plates 16 and 17 1 u The outer edges of the plates 16 and 17 are preferably reduced so that the prisms will stand out from the body of the plates and from the frame sections 12. A securing band and 17, which band is adapted to hold they two plates in tight engagement with thereflccting element 18, and this band 19 is disposed within the channel frame sections 12. Through the use of this -band 19, the plate sections 16 and 17 will at all'times be securely held together and this band also permits the ready shipment of the plate sectionswithout being mounted in-'the 'frame sections l12. Furthermore, the band 19 also serves to hold the plate members 16 and 17 together in the event the plates are cracked or otherwise broken intoV relatively large pieces.
Preferably, the plate section 12.comprises the front of the marker herein disclosed and 00 the glass or transparent element is colored green or some other suitable color and is rovided with blank sections and 21 W ich are adapted to receive indicia so as to desig- 5 nate the highway markings and the state so that when the plate 16 is illuminated by a headlight or. other light, the'indicia 22 and 23. will be readily visible. The plate section 17 is preferably colored red or some other suitable color so as to designate danger points, and' this face portion 17 is visible on the left scribed comprising a pair of channeled frame be painted orV tions being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
I claim 1. A highway4 marker of the character desections, means r`for hlnging one end of each frame section together, complementary stem members formed with the opposite end of each frame section, means for securing said stem in a supporting member, a ,prismatic plate mounted in the frame sections, indicia positioned on one face of said plate, a reecting element disposed in the frame and engaging against one face'of the plate whereby to reflect light projected against the face of said plate and means disposed within the frame and engaging about the plate and element to hold the plate and element in con- 5 tacting relation.
2. A highway marker of the character de-v 85 scribed comprising a frame, a pair of prismatic plates mounted in the frame,'a re-lecting element interposed between the plates,
hand'side ofthe road and is adapted to designate danger points?y in the form of curves,
section within the body thereof, and indicia 90 one of said plate members having a blockv road.
' culverts, bridges or the like. If desired,`only 'one of the plate sections 16 may be mounted in the frame sections 12 with the reflecting element 18 disposed on the back thereof and in like manner, only one of the danger plate numbers 17 may be mounted in the frame sections 12 so as to designate only a danger point but, if desired, the two plate sections 16 and 17 may be mounted in one pair` of the'frame sections 12' so that a vehicle approaching on the right side of the road will see the green marker on the right side and will see a red markeren the left side, there being two of these markers mounted one on each sidefof the Itis obvious, from the foregoing, that a relatively simple, but at the same time practical marker has been disclosed which is adapted to take the place of the present metal markers which are in use and which are only visible during the day time or at, a relatively short distance at night. These markers may also take the place of the marking members .which are at present in use designating curves or danger points on the highways and while I have disclosed the marking members as being colored green for the front or approach side on the right side of the road and red for the danger marker, I do. not wish to be lim- -spirit thereof, such changes and modificadisposed within the block section.
3. A highway marker of the character'de scribed comprising a` channelled frame, a pair of transparent members mounted vin the frame, indicia on1 one of said members, a're- 95 fleeting element interposed between said members, and Ia band disposed about said members.
4. A highway marker of the character described comprising a frame, a pair of trans- 100 parent members mounted in the frame, in'4 dicia o n one of said members, a reiecting element interposed between saidv members, and
bers into contact with the element.
5. A highway marker of the character described comprising a pair of transparent members, one of'said members having indicia on one face thereof, ay reflecting element between the members, and a securing-band extending across the outer face of each (member and engaging opposed edges to hold the members in contacting relation with said element.
6. A highway markerofithe character describedy comprising Ja pair of frame sections, means for hinging one end of said frame sections together, means for releasably securing the opposite end of said frame sections together, a pair of prismatic plate members dis. 120
